Actually, and non-jokingly, the most common problem with Rotary engines are their owners. Too many people who buy this car know nothing about the uniqueness of the engine.

Although there is no big issue with maintenance on a rotary, nor anything really special, it is not an engine that you can just ignore like many folks do who have piston engines.

You MUST check the oil level frequently (at least once a month..better 2 or 3 times)

You MUST change the oil frequently (3000 miles or so)

You MUST let the motor warm up before drving it hard. The different metals expand under heat a little differently so if you try to hit 9000 RPM while cold you're just looking for trouble.

You MUST let the engine rev (once it's warmed up of course) and running it to redline every day or two is GOOD for the health of the motor. It will clear out carbon build-up which can be more damaging to a rotary vs. a piston engine.

You MUST NOT shut down the engine cold, or you run the risk of flooding.

Quite simple. Follow these steps and you can hopefully expect 200K miles or more from your 8.

Hot Start Cures: 1) once flooded put your accelerator pedal to the floor before you crank so that you get the maximum airflow through the engine to dry out the combustion chamber (just like a 2stroke). In future to stop the engine, run the engine up to 4000rpm then take your foot off the accelerator to shut off the petrol, and when the rpm comes down to 1500rpm turn off the ignition key. This turns off the fuel supply and dries out the engine for easy restart. Perform the latest ecu software update which also stops over fuelling when cold or hot. 2) drop by your local scrappy and install the biggest second hand (read £20) battery that will fit in your battery tray (Ford Transit Van battery etc) 3) Mazda have a bigger starter option (£350) that will spin a flooded engine at the required minimum 200rpm (just like a 2stroke) 4) Hot Start Cure: google "Mazda RX8 Ametech Engine Restorer" and just shake up and add a 400mls Ametech additive to the existing oil (under £30) and top up with Mazda mineral oil and drive normally. Hot start compression problem CURED within 300 miles or a week of normal driving. Lasts many years and adds £1000s to the value of the car. The tiny copper silver lead particles in the Ametech quickly fills in the rotational scratches in the double eliptical cylinder walls improving compression.

    Operator error. j/k

Seriously, the rotary engine does need to be used slightly differently than a normal gasoline piston engine, like the differences between a normal engine and a diesel. Engine internal wise, rotary engines last about as long as similar piston engines.

yes as the apex seal is in the spark plug hole it leaks air and fuel past the plug hole into the next chamber right out the tail pipe this why they flood
