living room is for tv watching, listening to music, watching videos, kicking back with family and such. the sitting room is for more formal entertaining, talking and such without the entertainment center providing the recreation or entertainment.

Years ago the Parlor was considered the sitting room, a sitting room is used mainly for company while a living room is reserved for family, like a living room is usually more formal than a family room.....

Living room is for every day use, sitting room is where the nicer stuff is so it is only for special guest and occasions.
