It probably means that a cheque was deposited and was later returned unpaid, usually by another bank, because there were insufficient funds or there was a stop payment order, or some other reason. They will debit the account for the amount of the cheque plus they will debit a "penalty" charge, the amount depending on the bank.

It also means your are not in the US or else it would say "Unpaid check" (UK?)

If it is a cheque that you have paid into your account, then it probably means that the cheque has yet to clear. If it is a cheque you have paid out of your account, usually means that the cheque has not been honoured by yr bank. Check yr statement carefully

It means that the cheque has bounced because there is not enough money in the account to cover the cheque

It generally means one of two things. Either you have paid someone by cheque without sufficient funds to cover it in which case you will have incurred a charge, or someone has paid you by cheque without sufficient funds to cover it.

The colloquial term is "Bounced". I cannot understand why you have not phoned your Bank/Building Society to query this as they would have explained.

    Good Luck.

The bank returned the check because there were not enough funds in the account to cover the check.
