The first answer up there is half right -- the roots of "Mother's Day" in the UK bears no connection to the roots the holiday in the USA. In the UK, "Mothering Sunday" falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. This is believed to go back to about the 16th century when Christians would visit their "mother church" annually, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. In the UK, the day now simply celebrates motherhood and thanking mothers

Mother's Day in the USA was *not* founded by a greeting card company (though Hallmark and others have certainly made a fortune off the event -- but that's the case in the UK as well!).

After the American Civil War, Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament. Some states started to recognise the event as a holiday, but it was not until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honour of those mothers whose sons had died in war. Mother's Day is always the 2nd Sunday of May.

Many countries celebrate Mother's Day, or a Women's Day. Just check out Wikipedia's article, and you will see that the UK, Ireland, and Nigeria are the only three who celebrate Mother's Day on the same day. The US is in much bigger company today!

Because it was the date (4th Sunday in Lent) when people went "a-mothering" - they went to the "mother" church, the nearest cathedral, for Mass. It's also rooted in pagan celebrations for the start of spring. That's why we call it Mothering Sunday. The American version was invented by a greetings card manufacturer - says it all really.
