Its not that we don't pray for those things, except that when we pray, we kinda get replies from God (of course in his own mysterious ways, and you have to pray regularly to understand how God works). Many people pray to ask for help cause we know we need help, and God is like our father where we turn for a hug and ask for help when we need it and surely God is always with us because we believe in him.
Also, its not up to us whether other people believe in God or not. In order for God to help them, they need to believe in God first. Of course we pray for our fellow saints, but it would be hard for us to pray for people who do not even believe in Christ. Believe in Christ to be saved since God says that who every believes in Him is saved. And believe is not like...I know there is God, but believe that everything is in his hands and be with us for eternity. So, how do you know that those other people who needs to be saved believe in Christ or not? Its not up to us chirstians to make sure that Christ helps them but its up to themselves whether they believe in God in order for God to do his work on them.
And as for the "pay our bill thing", we often turn towards the Lord when we are in a case of an emergency, since He, like your parents, is the first one you turn to when there is trouble. We kinda think (probably human nature) that God has forgotten about us, but actually we as christians should believe that God has his ways for us.
Give an example of daily life: since you mentioned chistmas, lets use christmas presents. If you parents has nothing to do with the guy next door (you dunno them, they dunno you), would your parents buy presents for him/her? Have you ever asked your parents to buy christmas presents for the guy next door? This is the same thing, since the guy next door doesn't know your parents or you, why would your parents buy presents for him/her or why would you ever encounter that you should ask your parents to get them something?
But if the guy next door is your best friend. Then you would most probably think of him at christmas, and if he comes and says "hey wheres my present" you sure would most probably get him one (or if you dun have money, ask your parents).
And we DO thank God for what we have....but just like when your parents kinda dun let you go out at midnight, you would be pissed off sometimes too and all the food and clothes that they supply you kinda goes in the garbage bin...
Just think God as your father, then it would be easier to understand.
And we do pray for what matters, what we can pray for, and what we know that God can do something about (sure you would say that God should be able to do everything, but as I mentioned before, people have to believe in him to be saved).
Why do people have to believe to be saved? because if you dun even believe that their is God...how can God help you? What, you gonna think its from pure like that wow...clean water? or wow...food from no where? If they believe in God and pray for help from Him, then God would talk to them in His own ways and let them understand and know what to do and God will definately give them a hand with everything.
and we never said that we want to change other people's religious beliefs...since it really has nothing much to do with us. We have the responsibility to spread the good things to others and if they are not willing to accept it...so be it. Its like I have a HUGE pile of gold and I'm just wanting to share this with my friends, but if they dun want it...sure...then thats that.
