Why was Dagenham in Essex called Corned Beef City?
I have had various answers varying from:
the way houses were built
poor people in the war years only had corned beef to eat
people legs from sitting in front of the fire

In the 1930s, Dagenham became an overspill area for the inhabitants of east London. It received the nickname ' corned beef city' because that was all the people could afford to eat.
