  • What is it about Wicca that makes people convert to?

Best answer: For myself as a secular atheist I don't really get what anyone would see in any sort of nature worship. It seems a rationally baseless waste of time and effort. However I do know a few Wiccans and did go out with a Pagan for several years so spent time learning her viewpoint on the world. I guess can see a few reasons why others may be drawn towards a Wiccan or neopagan lifestyle.

To me, nature is a mechanistic process that owes us nothing. Life is wholly subject to it's merciless and amoral whims and those of us who want an average lifespan longer than 28 years have built a civilisation to protect us from it's ravages. It's a force to be respected, and one that invokes profound fascination and admiration, but something that neither needs nor deserves praise and worship. I'm well aware I share 40% of my genes with a banana and over 30% with the anthrax bacillus but I am in no way compelled to feel that I share a spiritual connection to them.

But that's just me. I understand many derive deep religious meaning from their connection to nature, both the silicates that form the planet's crust and the fecundity of life that clings to them. There is much to be admired in this view. Wiccans are highly unlikely to deliberately instigate an environmental catastrophe, hunt species to extinction or deplete soils into sandy oblivion. Given the concerns surrounding how badly we treat the planet there is a ready made alliance between nature worship and ecology.

Also, the suffocating and knuckle dragging attitudes of most of the primary monotheistic religions towards women make a faith where there is a significant role for female agency and power highly attractive. Just the thought of women taking an active role in their own belief system would be enough to have some fundamentalists throwing their keyboards out of the window and smashing the furniture. Honestly I can applaud Wiccans everywhere just for how angry they make the dogmatic mainstream faiths.

Like all religions there's bound to be the love-bombing aspect. Lost peoples find a place with like minded folk who do not judge them and welcome them into the fold. Many, especially those who grew up in dogmatic religious surroundings will never have experienced what it's like to be themselves and finding any belief or philosophy that fits their personality is extremely uplifting. It's easier to open up to those who share your views and where there are no "muggles" around to muddy the arguments.
In the end it's hard to argue against the moral role of any faith that above all promotes it's practitioners to "be excellent to each other!"

I've got to go there I guess. Some are probably joining for the magic(k) and spells after they saw some show on TV.
I suspect though that these are not the kind of Wiccans who stick around for long. That, or they do a lot of growing up in the meantime and realise they aren't going to be able to get people to sleep with them using love potions!

  • Why is it that I am always told that I have to seek and find god, why can't god find me instead?

Best answer: I don't know why that's the expectation, but after a lifetime of failed searching I've decided that if a god is interested in me then it can come find me. • Is modern medicine a myth?

Best answer: No it's not a myth. It's just a very very young science.

A myth is a story or set of stories that lots of people know, but nobody knows where or how the story originated.

Modern medicine is nothing like that.

  • Witches: Is there really any such thing as a real 'death curse'?

Best answer: Yes. There are several.
Unfortunately, a lot of people make use of them every day without realising it.
The methods a witch could use are similar in many ways, but most of us have no inclination to use them, far less teach them.
