• Current Events - Do you believe in raising your children gender neutral?

I don't know how that's supposed to work. If some kid goes into school and tells everyone he/she is gender neutral then someone can just pull down his/hers trouser to see what it is.

'Since productivity growth is the key piece in the economic jigsaw, economists have been keen to work out why it is so abnormally weak. If they can diagnose the illness they might be able to recommend a policy cure that will rectify it. But, alas, in seven years of investigations they are still searching for a coherent and broadly accepted explanation for the productivity disaster. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/busine...

If the person in the bathroom were an intruder, Pistorius could easily have just announced that he was armed and demanded that they leave the room immediately and identify themselves. He could have called the police as well, and just waited for them to arrive.

Either it was intentional, or he is an idiot of the highest magnitude.

This is not the first time he's been recalled to prison and in his case life should mean life. He's had enough chances, whereas his victim, Jamie Bulger has had no chance to grow up, go nightclubbing, buy his first car or have a girlfriend.
However, Venables' co-dependent does seem to have learnt his lesson and not reoffended so in his case should stay in the community.

My son is still teaching, and he was telling us about the convoluted way you have to prepare and evaluate every lesson, with formative and summative evaluation and targets. It's taken all the fun out of teaching.
I went into teaching because I loved, and was enthusiastic, about my subject and because I liked the cut and thrust of the classroom. It was being knocked out of me by the time I retired when all this rubbish was coming in.
Most teachers would be quite satisfied with their pay, if the ridiculous amount of time they have to spend on admin was reduced.
My daughter in law has just packed it in and got a part time job in the co-op so she can spend more time with the children.

Update re. behaviour. It's the low level stuff which is annoying, there's very little hard core violence really. But it can be managed with zero tolerance. A lot depends on whether you have the backing of senior staff - if you insist on a zero tolerance approach, with talking whilst you are talking in class etc. if you are not backed up senior staff it makes it very difficult. One martinet who insisted on checking uniform, no talking etc.was seen as "inflexible" by one useless head. Discipline has to come from the top.
Ironically, in the most difficult schools I taught in over the years, the staff were great and supportive, the worst behaviour was often in the "good" schools. I was actually told by one colleague that it was OK for the pupils to talk (loudly) in class, because they'd get the work done as homework. That was when I'd gone into the adjoining classroom to see what on earth was going on because of the racket coming from there.
Humour always helps too, most kids are great, really.

For the grammar freak, time is singular and the verb was therefore singular.

The aitch obsession is a classic case of class anxiety.
