I’m a senior is college. I’ve been working at my current minimum wage job for the past 2 years. We get paid $8.25 plus tips which is usually like $2 a shift sometimes more. I work in an ice cream shop in my city and we get pretty busy. I’ve never really ever hit it off with my boss. I can tell I’m not the favorite. I have really good intentions and am someone who is concerned with doing what’s right. I have anxiety. I’ve never asked for more hours before because I don’t want to come off as a burden. When I first started I used to always get three days a week a year and a half ago. This week I’m working one day and next week I’m working two. First of all, this place doesn’t offer a raise. They offer to make you a trainer (I’ve never been offered this) if they like you which means you get paid 50 cents more. I’m not a trainer. There’s people who have started 5 months ago who are above me on the schedule and get WAY more hours than me and are trainers. I feel uncomfortable to ask for more hours but I need them to make my next $500 school payment. My biweekly paycheck is usually $200 and I need to save money to move out and for other things. I am unable to save any money this way. How do I ask for more hours? Should I tell them im struggling? Should I get a new job? Thank you!

I held the same job for seven years. In October I left my job for another position. After a month and a half I was laid off. I was used to train the bosses niece and then laid off once she was trained. I should note it’s a family owned engineering business and I’m the only NON family member working for this company. As I was being let go my boss said to me sorry sweetie family comes first. I’ve applied for unemployment and I’ve been denied. My boss said that I was basically let go because I’m an idiot and couldn’t do my job. I’ve set up an appeal. I’m now being told I’m only eligible for one hundred fourteen dollars a week. Which seems insane considering I made close to sixty thousand a year. Not just that but I’m completing my Masters Degree in geotechnical engineering. I’ll be done in May. This semester is crucial for me. If all wasn’t bad enough my husband was laid off from his job YESTERDAY. They are closing his department. He is able to get the maximum benefits for unemployment we’ve already spoken to the office this morning. I feel like trying to argue for basically four hundred dollars a month is pointless and will cause myself more stress then it’s actually worth. I could make more then that working in Walmart. I should note I’m thirtyseven years old and I don’t think it’s my mothers place to dictate what I should and should not do. Any advice?

  • Why do employees have to wait 1 to 2 weeks to get a paycheck? Why can't they get paid on the same day of work?

The problem is, do you think saying that will backfire or help me in the interview? ( My logic is if they see i have no other commitments, they could see that I have more time to work for them. I get paid by the install. Is it legal? I’m still in their system as an employee, so they haven’t fired me.

As most people I know , go to work don’t talk to anyone and just do there job . Is there anything wrong with that , I feel it’s the best way to avoid problems , to avoid anything . Silence means you just don’t want the headaches ...another reason is being I feel certain people whom I work with are fake to my face so that’s honestly another reason , but then there is no win win on either side because they assume I might be upset with them . When I’m honestly not . Everything feels awkward because I don’t talk to my boss either it all started with him because I never spoke to him so even feeling that he may say things about me to my co/workers and them putting in there input makes me very uncomfortable me and my boss we have some unresolved misunderstandings that I feel maybe can never be cleared up , he acts like there is something wrong , I feel he too is fake to me and I just can’t stand that . I come there to do my job but from what I’ve seen he is not like that to anyone else maybe he assumes I don’t like him , there could be a number of reasons what he thinks I think of him but I don’t like that makes he me feel even more uncomfortable. He’s told me he likes how I work he said many times I’m a hard worker ..when I’m eating he gets up and leaves right away . When he asks me to do something for him I really never mind doing it but it’s behind the cover how he really is towards me .

Although there are age discrimination laws, you'd have a pretty impossible time proving that's why you didn't get hired, and some employers might not consider you, so it might be more difficult to find a job. Some will figure it's better to have someone for 4 years than a younger employee who's more likely to leave in 2. good luck

  • How do I deal with a nosy co-worker?

Best answer: I have the solution for you. First, you need to be a bit more strong with this Fallopian Tube. Just tell him, that there are other hobbies than paying too much attention to fellow workers. Tell him to use his golden touch and look after his own work load while the rest of us are looking out for ours. Be strong... show more

My roommate does not know that I know about this. Ten days ago (January 3) she found out that her work (a retail store) was closing. I accidentally found out 8 days ago (January 5) by her coworker, who let the news slip. Her coworker told me that they had 2-3 weeks (max) left on the job. My roommate hasn’t mentioned anything to me, but has made jokes about quitting her job (“I would quit my job for this dog” [at the humane society] and has made comments like “I’m excited to have the weekend off because next week is going to be busy at work” (because the stores closing down). She told me she applied to another job (which if she still had her job would be out of character for her, as she just got promoted to manager in November), and that her coworker applied to my place of work, and that our mutual friend came over one night because she needed help with her resume. It just feels a bit insulting that she thinks I can’t put two-and-two together. My roommate and I are close friends and while she isn’t obligated to tell me everything, I feel like she should give me a heads up or something since it’ll impact her financially. Should I bring it up to her? Should I wait for her to say something? I have no idea what to do in this situation. I want to help her but since she hasn’t mentioned anything maybe she doesn’t want me to know/wants to figure things out first? Any opinions or thoughts would be great!

Best answer: How you should negotiate depends on whether or not you're willing to take less than $23 to work at your preferred choice. If you're not willing to take less, your negotiation is easy. You politely and respectfully say that you're looking for $23. They'll either match it or they won't. That's a pretty big spread, so them not matching is the outcome you should expect.

If you are willing to take less, you should have an idea as to how much less before you get to the interview. Then you can be a little fuzzier and say something like "I was really hoping to get into the low $20s." and see if they'll come up any.

Up to you if you want to mention the other offer, but not all hiring managers react favorably when they feel like they're being forced into a bidding situation.

There was this job that I really wanted and they had several openings so I went and applied in person. And I really tried to do it right. When I got there they needed 2 forms of ID all I had was my social security card, my expired drivers license (by 2 days) and my temporary drivers license until I got the real one in the mail. They told me they couldn't take a temporary license but that I could go ahead and fill out the application and bring another form of ID the next day but that they would not submit the aplication until I brought proper ID. So the next day I brought my passport. They told me they already submitted my application but the day before they said they wouldn't until I had 2 forms of ID. Everywhere in the place there were signs saying 15 dollar application fee. They didn't charge me anything and said they'd call me for an interview in the next couple of days. That was 3 weeks ago. Do you think they just threw my application away? I met all of the qualifications for the job. Why didn't they at least let me interview?
