My sister's husband used to be a very devout Catholic. He used to teach children's catechism classes and went to daily Mass. My sister got pregnant 3 months after getting married to her husband. After their first was born, she got pregnant again 6 months later. Their second child was born just recently. All of a sudden, my sister's husband turned to atheism a few months after the second child was born. He no longer believes in God. Also, he doesn't want anymore kids. Though, my sister refuses to take artificial contraception because doing so is a mortal sin. I'm rather confused on how such a devout believer can turn into an atheist. I mean, he was very devout. He prayed the rosary daily and was always talking about the Catholic Faith. How can anyone go from being a devout Christian to an atheist?

Best answer: Psalms 14:1 says "The fool has said in His heart, "there is no God."

A person can believe something that's not true and wise... therefore foolish. But they can also be brilliant in many other ways.

Atheists are often very intelligent, memorizing scientific texts and atheistic arguments, and even making their own arguments.

It takes a great knowledge of scripture to counter atheist arguments. I myself once had many questions I could not answer about God, and it limited my understanding and trust of Him. But I found good answers. They may not have been the neat, tidy, perfect answers I was hoping for... but they were good and accurate answers.

Every good argument against God has an answer. But the answers may not have immediate "proof" that many demand.

Why does God allow suffering? Because suffering comes from disobeying Him. He also says life is not a bed of roses, but will have trials and suffering. We learn through suffering. He also is very good at using our pain to help others avoid the same pain. He also wants us to ease the suffering of others, to be His hands and feet, and the answer to others' prayers. He could make it go away in an instant. But He prefers to use us most of the time.

How do we know He exists? His fingerprints are all over nature. He even says His full glory is shown in nature, so man has no excuse. He also is evident in the hearts of people. He also reveals Himself to us in spirit, when we are open to Him. It also is highly illogical to believe that life could come from non-life without a designer. The same with the sun, stars, and solar system. Do we want a Godless life so much, we'd hide from these understandings, and risk losing His offer of eternal life?

Why doesn't He answer my prayers? We need to know how to pray. We need to first believe He wants to answer, and to pray for things He would want. He won't make us instant millionaires or sports stars. He allows us to grow and learn slowly, manually, ask we ask, and as we intend to use it to benefit other people. It's all about glorifying Him. And even with all this in place, it may not be the right time or place. He may say no, later, I have something better, or I will if you will.

Does He condone slavery? No. Slavery in ancient times was common. Those guilty of a crime or great indebtedness could offer to be someone's slave. Scripture acknowledges several ancient customs that weren't God ordained. Scripture also condemns slavery in Exodus 21:16 and 1 Timothy 1:8-10. It's also covered under do unto others.

Why did He destroy so many people, including women and children? In the days when He was preparing the Jews to enter the promised land, there was evil beyond the imagination rampant. God gave swift punishment of blatant sin in the Old Testament in several instances. He wanted it gone, period, purged, cleansed... allowing only His obedient children to thrive and prosper... giving them basically everything if only they obeyed and trusted Him. God used this period to be an example of what He is justified to do... but chooses not to do anymore. Today we go by the New Testament, with Jesus allowing us easier forgiveness, and more time to mend our ways. God is more patient, slower to anger, and gives us more guidance through the NT and the Holy Spirit.

Why doesn't God show Himself? Because He gives us enough evidence in the other areas. Nature, life, love, the wonder of it all. He's within us and other believers. He reveals Himself to us in spirit, and especially through the scriptures, which are truly alive with His power and life and wisdom. Jesus told Thomas he believed because he has seen and touched, but blessed are those who haven't seen what Thomas has. God lets us see and understand so much in spirit, yet will bless us mightily for believing despite not physically seeing and touching Him. Learning to understand how God is simultaneously here and not here is life's greatest key.

Most atheist arguments are standard and repetitive. GotQuestions.org is a great website for all the answers. We truly need to know the scriptures well, and know apologetics, to be prepared to answer atheists' arguments and questions. But what a wonderful opportunity to show God's truth-- not only to atheists, but to anyone else watching or reading the discussion.

It's a human thing to have more enthusiasm for something unGodly, than Godly. We as believers can be lazy and content in God's acceptance, while unbelievers can be all revved up about disproving God in a sentence or two. I say if all believers had the drive and enthusiasm atheists do, the world would constantly be seeing evidence of God's love and truth through believers... leaving little room for doubt.
