If you find that you continue to gain weight on your maintenance calories, then you have to accept that you miscalculated the number of calories you need and or you need to change what you eat, when you eat, and/or your exercise.

Eating a good breakfast helps raise metabolism, as does regular exercise .. even daily walking.
A pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat .. so build muscle.

Here are the guidelines for loosing weight:
You should NEVER eat LESS than 1300-1400 calories a day. Eat less than that, and you metabolism slows down and weight loss becomes almost zero. And what your body burns for fuel is your muscle . .it saves the fat. You see .. the body thinks there is a famine going on, so it has to conserve the fat for running away from a predator, and it has to burn as few calories as possible. What happens is that when you STOP dieting, because your metabolism is NOW so slow .. eating 2000 calories acts like eating 4000 calories. You quickly gain back everything you lost and then about 20-30 pounds MORE than you were before you started dieting.

First determine your proper weight range, what is healthy and will keep you functioning: https://www.smartbmicalculator.com/

Then calculate how many calories it takes to maintain your current weight, given your age/height/gender/activity level: https://www.freedieting.com/calorie-calc... A healthy rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds a week. More than that, and you start to move towards "starvation mode" with all the draw-backs and health risks mentioned above. SO .. take your daily maintenance calorie count, and for 6 days of the week eat 600 calories LESS.a day. On the 7th day eat your FULL maintenance calories . .this tricks your body into thinking there is NO famine going on, so your weight loss will continue. Except for the occasional plateau here and there.

Eat 5 small meals a day, making everything you eat healthy and avoiding fattening and junk foods. Count the calories for EVERYTHING you eat. Pre-plan what you will eat, and eat nothing that is not ON your plan for that day. Make sure that every meal has some protein in it, because that keeps hunger away.

I am losing weight for medical reasons, and I lose 1.2 to 1.4 pounds per week. I fell and injured myself in May .... couldn't exercise, and went off my diet (but not unreasonably) for 2 months. Gained NOTHING back. Now I'm back on the calorie restriction and moderate exercise and losing again.

Just remember that everytime you have lost another 10 pounds, you have to go back and re-calculate your maintenance calorie level .. it will be lower than before.

Best answer: This is actually one of the best ways to lose weight. All of the other people commenting here are, I hate to say it, but, idiots. Caloric restriction does not work. Fasting does. It's as simple as that. Eating one meal a day, is an extreme form of intermittent fasting (fasting sometimes, not fasting others), which is an easy-to-follow and effective form of fasting. Obviously, straight up fasting is the most effective, but that's quite a bit harder, and can come with health risks if you don't know what you're doing and do it too long, or don't ease your wait into it. Especially since you are only 15 and still growing, restricting all nutrients could have some additional health risks.
So, yeah, I'd recommend just doing the one meal a day, and sticking at that until you are at an ideal weight. Drinking a lot of water can help you lose a little bit more weight, work your way up to about 1 fluid ounce/pound of body weight per day. Drinking more water also has a bunch of other health benefits.
About the one meal that you eat each day: try to restrict carbs, especially sugars, and try to have a lot of fat in it. Carbohydrates, especially sugars basically reset the fat-burning process, and fats don't as much. Really though, the main thing is that you should have a lot of vegetables in it, to make sure you get the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs. You should aim for about 1250 calories in that once meal, or until you're full. Or, if you're going for that one meal every other day, somewhere around 1750, also or until you're full.
Exercise should be soon after eating your meal to maximize its effect. Exercise in a fasting state has very little effect, but if you do so after eating, you'll be able to get the most out of the exercise.

Edit: By the way, "starvation mode," yeah, that's a complete myth, lol. The opposite is true, when you have nothing to eat, or next to it, your body will tap into its fat reserves, that's exactly what it's for. Why would your body store food for when it's needed, but when it's needed, not use it?

  • Why aren't I losing weight?

I eat really heathy and drink a lot of water. I only drink water or herbal teas. However I have big thighs which id like to tone but i think that the muscle won't show through the fat so timing exercises won't really work. I tried running but it didn't make a difference.

  • Which Scale is Right?

I have three different scales. A red one, a white one, and a grey one. The grey one puts me at 164. The white one puts me at 165. The red one puts me at 171. Which scale would be right? I weighed myself on them at the same time, right after waking up and using the bathroom. Would the highest one be right?
