My mom is 55 and she works for 4 hours in the morning and then comes home and sits in a chair all day. She’ll go to the store once a week, does laundry, and occasionally cooks dinner. The rest of the time, she sits in a chair on her phone and watches tv. She has no disabilities but she has had some health concerns but nothing long term or untreatable. I love her to death and I don’t want her health to decline due to sitting so much. She never goes anywhere and has no outside activities besides church. I just want her to enjoy her life! All her kids are grown and she has so much time on her hands but doesn’t take advantage of it. Any ideas?

Best answer: Absolutely. But what do you mean by mentally disabled people? If you are referring to people with intellectual disabilities - yes. If you are referring to people with psychiatric diagnosis - yes they can. I am raising two adults who are mentally disabled - however you define it - and both are capable of anger. The idea that people with Down syndrome are all sweet and innocent disparages their very real reality. They get frustrated and angry when they have a hard time doing something, when they are bullied, and when their parent tells them they can't have what they want.

I have bipolar and I feel like this country does not have enough education about mental illnesses. I was diagnosed with bipolar since i was a teen. For years and years I have been trying to apply for disability and have been turned down and recently got turned down by a disability hearing judge. Now everyone believes this stupid judge and is forcing me to go find a job. My family my attorney and my friends and relatives now don't believe my psychiatrist and says I can work but that I am just too lazy to want to work. No one believes me at all and I get bashed on here like crazy when I am trying to get support and sympathy from people. My doctor says I can't work and so I will not go to work for now. My mental state is a mess so how can I work. I wished that bernie sanders was elected president because if he were he would have gotten more people educated about mental illnesses and how it can affect someone's ability to work. We instead have some moron in office. I feel like if bernie was president I would have gotten disability. I am tired of it and I am leaving this site and I am gonna find some type of mental health forum so that I can post and get support from others who also can't work because of an mental illness. Bipolar disorder can be detriorating enough to affect one's ability to work. I'll just say to people I've applied for jobs but never gotten calls back to get them to stop bugging me. How come people don't believe bipolar can affect one's ability to work ?

You had to earn these credits after you turned age 21 and before you became disabled.” This is my earning record from age 13 years to age 26 years. I stopped working in 2014, but the judge said I was disabled 2015. In 2015 I was 26 years ols I believe judge skimmed my work history. I don’t know if a mistake was made and would appreciate it if anyone can tell me if I have the needed 17 credits? Do I have 17 credits according to my Social Security statement? (Screen shot included) am 29 years old. I was approved for ssi Oct,26, 2017 and the date I became disabled is April,15th, 2015. I was 26 on the date I became disabled. I was denied Ssdi because I did not have enough work credits.. SSA states “To get benefits if you become disabled right now, you need 17 credits of work. You had to earn these credits after you turned age 21 and before you became disabled. Your record shows you do not have enough credits in the right time period.”
