  • Portable air conditioning unit - is air flow rate or BTU more important?

    If you have a 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner which has a flow rate of 320M3/h or you have an 11,500 BTU unit which went up to 360M3/h air flow rate, would the higher BTU be more important or the airflow rate??

  • How can I put Windows 7 on a separate hard drive while it is being used for Data?

    I bought an Acer desktop with two hard drives in which come up as 457GB each. I am running Windows 8.1 but would like to install Windows 7 on the second hard drive. However it is being used as a "Data" drive. This is how Acer have set up the computer.

    I have two questions. Firstly if I am running Windows 8.1 is there any problem installing an older version of Windows if it is on a second hard drive??

    Secondly, how would I remove the setup this desktop has whereby the second hard drive says "data"? It comes up as having only 149mb of data on it, but under "this PC" I can click on the hard drive and see no data on it at all.

  • Do lenses for the Canon 5d mk1 work out more expensive than similar quality for 1.6 crop?

    I am thinking of buying a used Canon 5D mk1 full frame camera, but am yet to see a kit lens advertised anywhere ( similar to the 18-55mm) which would give good images for a low price.

    I've looked at a lot of reviews but the only budget lens seems to be the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, which is cheap, but then the image quality does not seem to be very good judging by photos I've seen from this lens.

    I am undecided between a used 5D or a new Canon 60D, but am getting the impression that I will pay more for lenses with the 5D. Also many articles say there is more vignetting on the edge of full frame photos which means you need better quality glass. Does full frame ultimately mean paying a lot for quality lenses or is there some cheaper way into full frame?

  • Why is MYSQL giving me more rows of data than expected?

    I am working through a PHP and MYSQL exercise book and in one exercise I have copied the code exactly as in the book shows, but instead of getting two sets of 4 rows displayed - the second table should have updated fields in it - I get anything between twenty and twenty-eight rows??

    I sense that the code is right but something more basic is wrong. Perhaps it isin how the sql files are saved, or MYSQL might be storing data from every time I open the file and adding it together??

    The code I have used is below.

    pattern CHAR(16) ,

    color CHAR(16) ,

    price DECIMAL(6,2)

    ) ;

    INSERT INTO tiles ( pattern , color , price )

    VALUES ( "Spring" , "Green" , 9.99 ) ,

    ( "Summer" , "Yellow" , 12.99 ) ,

    ( "Autumn" , "Brown" , 9.99 ) ,

    ( "Winter" , "Blue" , 8.99 ) ;

    SELECT * FROM tiles ;

    UPDATE tiles

    SET pattern = "Fall" WHERE pattern = "Autumn" ;

    UPDATE tiles SET color = "Gold" WHERE color = "Yellow" ;

    UPDATE tiles SET price = 10.99 WHERE price = 9.99 ;

    UPDATE tiles SET PRICE = 11.99 WHERE id = 4 ;

    SELECT * FROM tiles ;

  • Are there any trainers for road running that are as light and slim profiled as Nike Free?

    I am looking for trainers both for running and to occasionally wear casually with shorts. The Nike Free trainers seem to look and feel great, but the problem is they are meant to be an off road shoe. I am not sure if they would last long at all running on concrete surfaces??

    So, my questions is are there any road running trainers that are also of a slim profile (not too bulky)?? I am after slim profile trainers as I will be wearing them with shorts and I have slim legs. Bulky trainers make me look even slimmer in the lower leg.

  • Is my graphics card causing Youtube to stutter or my browser?

    Youtube used to play videos fine on my computer in Firefox and Chrome, but now all videos stutter both with video and audio. I have a Rage 128 Pro Ultra AG graphics card which must be very old, but I noticed Flash Player hogs a lot of my CPU as well?

    Is this a graphics card issue, or is it Flash Player or something else? I would be happy to access youtube some other way that does not require flash f possible??

  • Does memory foam in your mattress make you hot by retaining heat?

    I am about to buy a mattress that has a memory foam layer on the top and springs below. However, I live in a house which really retains the heat and even on cool evenings outside it gets warm inside. I am wondering if the memory foam in the mattress is likely to leave me feeling warm and uncomfortable during the hotter months of the year by trapping the heat from my body?

  • Is the Canon600d or the Nikon d5100 best for lens compatibility and HD video?

    I am about to buy either the Canon 600d or Nikon d5100, but I'm not sure about the benefits of buying lenses for either camera. I understand that Canon does not have back compatibility with its own lenses where Nikon does. So that could be an advantage in buying lenses for the Nikon?

    However, I have read that Nikon does not have image stabilisation or auto focus in the body of the camera but puts those functions in the lenses instead. Does this create a problem with older lenses which do not have image stabilisation or auto focus in the lens?

    Also, what about third party lenses?? Can Canon use third party lenses that Nikon can't use or vice versa. I guess the question is does the Canon with image stabilisation built into the camera have an advantage with third party lenses??

    Lastly, anyone know what the differences are in terms of video and HD with these cameras. I heard one of them has a noisy auto focus that can be used when making videos, but is there really a difference?

  • Is it possible to put a graphics card in new laptop?

    I am going to buy a laptop, but am not sure if I will need a dedicated graphics card. If I buy one that is running graphics from the processor, is it possible to install a graphics card myself, or is it an expensive and complicated process?

    Do modern laptops come with space inside to install another card or are they so thin that you would have difficulty installing anything more inside? I am thinking of buying an Acer like the one seen here

    Or an Asus like this one

    Incidentally, if two machines are running i5 processors, but one has 4gb ram and the other has 8gb is there a big difference in performance when running software and browsing the web with a few tabs open at the same time??

  • Does spray paint have to be sanded?

    Is it necessary to sand both the primer and final coat when spray painting? I have spray painted a fridge and other metal items with a primer, and then a rustoleum spray paint. Most car spray painting websites recommend sanding the final coat, but I am concerned that after using only a few spray cans I will sand through the paint, even with 1200 grit sandpaper - leaving an uneven finish.

    Is it not easier to use a decorators tack cloth to wipe away residual dust / paint and then find a way to lacquer, or wax the project.

    Also, if the primer completely covers the item, but is thiner in some places than others, will this show through in the final coat of paint??

  • Can I solder silver solder to a brass phosphorus metal surface?

    I have a brass phosphorus metal surface that has some scratches and I want to make it smooth again. Can I use silver solder to do this, and if I do so will the silver bond to the metal to make a strong bond?

    This is for a washing machine part so I need it to bond strongly. I have only ever soldered PCBs in the past so do not know if this will work.

  • How do I give someone limited access to my Facebook account?

    I would like to give certain people limited access to my Facebook account so that they cannot view my friends list. If it is possible I would even restrict some people from viewing photos, but I don't know how these settings can be made. On the facebook Help section it only gives advice on making your updates available to certain people (by way of friends lists I think) but I want a way to go on to the profile of someone on your friends list and restrict their access to your page. I don't want to delete them - just restrict access.

  • Do Adidas Samba suede trainers get creased by rain?

    I am thinking of buying some suede trainers, and have seen ones like Adidas Samba suede, however I am not sure if they can be worn in the rain at all. Does the rain destroy these kind of trainers straight away, or is it a gradual thing?

  • What is the best way to keep a daily journal?

    I am having treatment with a shrink and have been advised to keep a journal of my thoughts, progress, and self-help books I am reading. I have kept some diaries and thoughts in the past stored in word documents on my computer, but I find this to be unorganised, and inefficient.

    I would prefer something that I can have to hand instead of needing to turn on my desktop PC. However, it would need to have numerous sections for me to make entries. I don't think you can type with a small personal organiser, but I don't know. Also I am not sure pen and paper will be suitable.

    Can anyone suggest a good compromise that won't cost me too much money? Any advice will help including more general advice on keeping journals, websites, or anything else.

  • What's the cheapest way to get to Southall from Paddington and back on train?

    I think I can use my Oyster card with First Great Western, but is it cheaper to buy a return ticket instead? The TFL journey planner will not load for me. That is why I am asking here.

  • How can I make wireless network adapters work in Vista?

    I reinstalled Vista and found that my Dell laptop was not picking up wireless signals. A diagnostic test in Vista told me "the computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured".

    I then tried to go to device manager and uninstalled the drivers for the devices as I had been told they would automatically reinstall when I rebooted. However, this did not happen. Now under "Other devices" in device manager I have some devices which I think were formerly under the Network adapters tab. Three are listed as "Base Device Manager", one is listed as "Network Controller" and one as "Video controller".

    For the Network controller I cannot get any information on the device make or model. I am wondering how to resolve this issue, and get these devices to be installed and configured properly. This seems to be something to do with Vista, but I cannot find a way around it.The laptop is a Dell model number PP22X.

    I am thinking I will need to install Vista again, but I hope there is a simpler version around this.

    Anyone know how I can resolve this apart from any hilarious suggestions for buying a mac?
