I probably don’t care, but I do like to encourage pessimism. An additional benefit is that the three day question expiry should give us all the opportunity for a good gloat.

I know the couple very well, and I am at a loss. In near desperation I turn to you for ideas. The (European) couple both work and live in Cambodia. I fly out in about 2 weeks via Hong Kong. Any ideas for a wedding present? Please bear in mind - I fly, so if bought in UK must be light, robust, small. They can’t own property in Cambodia (law) so no "house" presents as such. Most things I could get would be cheaper in Cambodia anyway! Budget about £200 (pounds sterling) or so. I will be taking a few quintessentially British items with me as gifts anyway. I have asked the couple and received no useful answers. I guess I’ll pick something up in HK but inspiration letting me down. Any practical ideas greatly appreciated, I am at a loss.

Whilst many such books are academically interesting, dealing with timeless stories and eternal themes very few are actively enjoyable to read in their own right. So which widely regarded work you have read, did you really enjoy the most? For my part, and for varying reasons I have ENJOYED: The Iliad and Odyssey (OK we could debate these as "books") Tom Jones (still actively funny) Don Quixote (modern translation makes reading it pleasure) Keep the Aspidistra flying (1984 and A farm dull to read!) Crime and punishment (a real page turner for me)

To some it means evil, but that’s not fair, at times its ubiquitous and everywhere. In the securest safe it may be found, and in the coffin buried underground. Whilst the racist "enjoy" many slang derogatory terms for the groups they discriminate against, there seem few alternatives for the word "racist" itself. Famously the Inuit language has many words for snow because its important to them. Similarly I believe racism seems increasing prevalent so we need more terms to describe them. So lets redress the balance somewhat. Do you know any non-obscene words or phrases for a racist bigot? If not, why not suggest a new word....it might just catch on.
