  • What is Wrong with This Dude's PC?

It's a fantastic build, but look at the graphics rendering starting at around 06:43. My old single-core laptop could do better than that.

  • What is a Chat Room?

I mean, I know what a chat room is, but what are the specific chat rooms the media keep referring to?  I've been on some form of the internet for over 40 years, and I can't remember ever being in a proper chat room.  Yet the media constantly refer to them as if they were ubiquitous.  Did the old messenger programs count as chat rooms?  How about Facebook chat?  Do the media really mean message boards or forums?  I'm confused.

  • What is the Meaning of "Roguelike" and "cRPG"?

I did a bit of research on the web and from what i can tell cRPG stands for computer role-playing game or classic role-playing game, which means little.  I haven't heard of any of the video games classified as cRPGs, but they just seem like RPGs to me.  All the info I got on Roguelike was that it includes permadeath, and once again I had never heard of any of the games.  I downloaded a roguelike game and it seems to be a first-person shooter.  Any definitive answers out there?

  • Why does Netflix blank my screen?

Often when I open Netflix in Google Chrome my screen goes black for a second or two, then things resume normally with my mouse pointer centered. Occasionally a bit of static is visible and there is a crackly-pop sound, after which my PC is locked up and requires a hard reboot.. I might have thought it a hardware issue if not for the pointer becoming centered. Any clues?

  • How do I get patterns to "snap" to lines in the playlist of Fruity Loops Studio 10?

All of a sudden my FL Studio 10 decided to allow free movement of pattern in the playlist window, making it a pain in the rear to line up patterns. I can't seem to find any setting to change this. For the first 30-or-so songs I made the patterns snapped to the vertical lines in the playlist, but apparently I permanently toggled that off.

Please help, songs take 3 or 4 times as long to make now and I'm frustrated.

  • How Long Before Penmanship is No Longer Required Curriculum?

Yes, learning to write by hand improves motor skills and hand-eye coordination, but is becoming unnecessary for written communication as electronic devices become ubiquitous. However, just like the "cashless society" that was once predicted (but will almost certainly become reality, in some form, one day in the future) to exist right now, I believe this will take a much longer time to manifest than is possible or even pragmatic. It may seem like a silly concept, but Natural Selection, Capitalism, and just sheer pursuit of efficiency have a way of eliminating practices that become unneeded, more complex, and more time-consuming to achieve their goals.

Just ask the telegraphers, wainwrights, lectors, todhunters, coopersmiths, torchlighters, xylographers, or anybody who knew how to write before the invention of the quill circa 500 AD.

P.S. I'm still waiting on the three seashells.

  • Why Does Wikipedia Have a Bad Reputation for Accuracy?

I understand that just anybody can edit a page, but inaccurate information can also be edited out, and almost always is in a timely manner. As a matter of fact, the only instances of long-standing misinformation I've seen were on the pages of controversial topics that were locked due to constant vandalism.

It seems like an informational database that is constantly updated and edited by peer review would end up being the most accurate, but cite Wikipedia and many will scoff or laugh.

  • What is a good site for basic HTML tutorials?

What I'm trying to do is simple: I would like to type a document into Open Office or Wordpad or Works if necessary and save it as an HTML file with blanks that are tabable for keyboard or dropdown menu input. For example:

I, _____________, do solemnly swear this on the ____ day of ____, 20__.

I would like to open the document and have a cursor ready for keyboard input at the first blank, and then be able to tab to the date, month, and year for dropdown menus of the appropriate data range (i.e. 1st to 31st, Jan to Feb, 11 to 99).

This shouldn't be too difficult, as I used to design HTML webpages. However they were graphics related and at no time did I ever ever need to learn how to design a form.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and TYVMIA.

  • What Is a Good and FREE Disk Imaging Program?

Here's the kicker - it has to work with Windows 2000.

And by free I mean freeware that is fully functional - it will make a full image of a hard drive, it will burn a rescue CD or DVD that does not require a full-version (not OEM) Windows CD/DVD or Linux CD/DVD, and it will fully restore from the rescue disk without any additional purchase.

(No, I don't use W2K but I know someone who's sort of stuck with it. But I'll gladly take suggestions for XP/Vista/7 software, too.)

  • How Can I Replace a QWERTY Keyboard on a Laptop?

I am sick of hunting and pecking (although I do it well enough - I once tested at 55 CWPM) and I refuse to learn how to type on the outdated, arcane, and asinine QWERTY keyboard. Perhaps you can help me with one of two solutions:

    1. Converting my laptop (Acer Aspire 5532, not that it should matter) to Dvorak or the like -there may be other ways, but I envision physically prying off and rearranging the keys on by keyboard (as opposed to buying a Dvorak KB and installing it) and then remapping the keys, through software if at all possible.

    2. Buying an external device - about six years ago I read about a peripheral that made a full keyboard's worth of characters accessible with your left hand. Your hand rested on a hemispherical surface, which I assume moved on axes like a joystick, and you had buttons under each finger and your thumb. Does anyone know where to find such a device? Its creators claimed typical results of 150 CWPM once you trained yourself to use it. It also seemed like it would be damned handy for playing games.

BONUS: How can I, short of physically removal, disable the Caps Lock key? My laptop has no indicator light and I often find it gets toggled on inadvertently when playing games.

  • Help with Remote Desktop Access, Please.?

For a client I installed RDP Lite from Mochasoft on his IPhone so he could log into his office computer, and the setup was remarkably easy. What Windows software is there available (preferably for free) that makes a remote connection just as simple?

The computer he connects to runs Windows XP sp3, and is behind a firewall for which the relevant port (3389?) is forwarded to that comp's static local IP. I find it hard to believe it was so easy to Google an Iphone app to do this but the PC app is so hard to find. BTW, his home comps run either XP or Windows 7. TYVMIA!

  • Why don't my USB ports work?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and the USB ports don't work. Device manager lists 5 USB root hubs as bad. They will not recognize my external HD nor mouse, yet my external HD turns on when plugged in and the mouse lights up, blinking, if plugged in halfway.

I tried updating the drivers for both the ports and the hubs to no avail, and also used Dell's driver fixer software. 5 ports and hubs are listed but I only have 4 physical ports. I am hesitant to remove and reinstall all of them as I cannot see USB ports and hubs in the add device list. BTW I am running XP Home SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated; TYVMIA.

  • Is full-screen display of (i.e. nothing but) visualizations possible on Yahoo! Music Jukebox?

OK, a couple of other people have tried, but apparently to no avail. [F11] does not work, and please don't send us a link to the "help" page that Y!MJB defaults to, as there is no answer one way or the other there. The visuals are great, but lack of a full-screen mode seems like it would be a great oversight. There must be a way, or at least a way on the way. I am seriously missing WMP for this reason alone, as it is good for nothing else but letting Bill Gates know what I watch and listen to. That said, I was hoping for Y!MJB to replace both WMP and MMJB, but it so far fails in only this one regard. Help, or even a simple "can't be done," would be greatly appreciated - many thanks in advance.
