Hi there. I'm trying to start a UK business selling soaps and body scrubs etc but also raw materials such as pure oils and butters. I know I need cosmetic safety assessments for soaps but do I need them for selling raw/pure ingredients such as "100% pure sweet almond oil?" I'm unsure if I need a cosmetic safety assessment for selling this. I plan on writing something like "Aromatherapy/Massage Oil" on the label. Since I'm selling it to be applied to the skin is it classed as a cosmetic, or just a vegetable oil? I seem to be coming up against conflicting information. The EU regulations say that anything applied directly to the dermis is classed as a cosmetic and requires a cosmetic safety assessment. However, with sweet almond oil it can also be classed as a food and may not need the cosmetic safety assessment. I'm therefore wondering if it has to do with the way I market it: If I say on the label that it's for massage then it's classed as a cosmetic and requires assessment, but if i label it just as "Sweet almond oil" and (don't put massage oil on the label) can I get away with not having the cosmetic safety assessment as it would be classed as a food?

I also intend on becoming a supplier of the the constituant ingrediants (oils/butters etc). Im focusing on the natural, environmentally friendly element of the business but I'm finding it difficult to come up with a company identity that reflects this. Can you suggest anything? Note: I'm looking for a name that can be taken seriously as a business, and allows me to expand into other areas as required, so not a joke-style names please. Thanks!

  • Is white bread still bad for you even though the bleaching of flour has been prohibited since 1997 in the UK?

I have always been told that white bread is the worst kind of bread. It's unnatural and the flour is bleached, which is not good for you. However since bleaching of flour is illegal in the UK and has been prohibited since 1997, apart from the ADDED nutritional benefits of eating wholemeal breads, is white bread actually "bad" for you?

Each day I focus on one body part from chest/shoulders/back/triceps/biceps (not really worried about legs at the moment) with 1 hour of cardio, split up into four 15 minute sections. An example of which is outlined below. I've been going to the gym for about 2 years but used to do a cardio day followed by weights day. I was just wondering if the example routine below would be over training? I've been doing ot for a few days and it's quite difficult, but it may just be that I need time to get used to it. Any opinions? Thanks. There are two of us there who do this job of continual development on a single project. Is it a reasonable request to ask my employer for 6 to 12 months off for travelling? I would not mind giving a large amount of notice (up to 6 months even) so that would help. Has anyone been in this situation before where they have taken extended leave and been able to return to their job? Or are you an employer, and if so what would you say if one of your employees asked you for this?

  • Your opinion on the roles of the sexes. ?

In our society today, the Zeitgeist is that both sexes are equal. There should be no more "husband at work, wife at home looking after the kids" etc I personally don't mind either way, my partner could be a career woman or a home maker, whatever makes her happy. I don't consider one to be better than the other. What's your opinion on this? show more
