  • Why does cold weather give me so much energy?

I tried googling this and the overwhelming results had to do with people feeling sleepy or exhausted in cooler weather. However, a cold front blew through my area overnight and I suddenly have the energy and motivation to do big (primarily physical) tasks that I've been putting off/too tired to tackle for weeks.

  • How are taxes paid in wealthy countries other than the USA?

I don't care about the rates and costs - I'm curious about the methods and organizations and general paperwork involved and whether or not exemptions apply and how complicated the process is.

The only rate that would possibly be interesting is whether or not different income levels or castes or demographics pay different percentages within a single country.

  • How much gluten triggers reactions in people with gluten intolerance and celiac disease?

I want to build a baking business with celiac/gluten intolerant-friendly options, but as someone who s grown up in a family with barely any allergies, intolerances, or diet-limiting conditions whatsoever, I ve gotten into certain habits such as using a measuring cup for flour, tapping the excess flour off and using the same cup for sugar. I m aware that with some conditions, this kind of negligence can be fatal or at least physically harmful, and I ve heard that some people have had to avoid companies that process flour in the same facility as their other products.

  • How do I save this failed custard (for ice cream)?

It started with the ice cream maker. It came with a recipe for peppermint ice cream, and since I wanted ginger flavoring instead, I went hunting for a recipe for that instead. It turned out that the recipes were nearly identical, except the ginger ice cream was actually a ginger custard and called for an additional cup of heavy cream, as well as eight eggs. Wanting a recipe that would freeze well in my ice cream maker and with one eye on the calorie count, I cut out the extra cream and half of the eggs. I figured I was pretty smart. After all, it should end up about the consistency of custard, only a little icier, right?

I may or may not be a complete idiot. I'll get back to you on that.

After cooking the mixture on the stove top and getting impatient enough to deem it done (maybe it wasn't thick enough?), I transferred the mix to the fridge, where it was to cool for at least three hours. Upon coming back for it, I found myself with a watery substance that was about the right color and flavor, but had little lumps in it like I had stirred melted butter into cold milk. I figured this would go away when I churned it. I was wrong.

I now have a tub of what looks like slightly lumpy ice cream, but melts and leaves Crisco-textured bits on the tongue. I think it's actually lumps of the heavy cream, but beyond that don't have any idea of how to repair it. Can I just melt it in a saucepan and let it cook until it's thicker? Should I temper a few more eggs and add it during the process? Does it REALLY need all that heavy cream? (I'm almost out.)

  • How should I write food allergy notifications?

I want to sell home-baked goods, but out of all of the personal, financial, and legal restrictions, the thing that seems to give me the most trouble is having to write food allergy notifications. It seems like it's possible to be allergic to just about anything, so how do I know which ingredients I should list or leave unmentioned?

  • How to turn on a laptop with a fan error?

I restarted my laptop because it's literally been on for WEEKS and was starting to show it, but now it doesn't want to turn on. It powers up, beeps a couple times, displays a little "fan error" message, beeps and turns off. And well, this is just DANDY, you know, because I KNEW the fan was going, I could HEAR the darn thing was only working half the time, I was going to get it replaced after the semester was over, and now the computer is holding my term paper and ALL of my sources hostage--and the paper's due today.

I'm typing it up again as fast as I can, but I'm kind of hoping I won't have to... That, and I've managed to keep the computer cool to the touch since the symptoms cropped up. And it's got one of those Intel centrino duo processors, so it should just stop working before any permanent damage is done, right?

Is there any way to turn my laptop on long enough to retrieve the data?

  • Can I use grayscale in self-publishing services, or does it cost extra?

Self-publishing and book-printing services such as Lulu have two color options: Black/white and color. Color is often a lot more expensive. So does grayscale usually fall under black and white, since it just uses black ink, or do I have to use black and white dots/pixels to create varying shades of gray?

  • Is there a way to send self-published books to specific unknown locations?

I know, weird question, but hear me out.

I have a friend that I know strictly online. We're both writers and make up stories together, and I wanted to send my friend a bound copy of a comic I made out of one of the stories.

The rub is that we're strictly online friends. We trust each other to an extent, as friends do. But out of respect for the worriers and protectors in our lives, we keep certain things private. We go by discreet usernames, don't tell each other our ages, and DON'T exchange addresses of any kind. EVER.

I know of several self-publishing websites on which I can have my book made, but I'm having trouble finding a way to send the book to my friend without exchanging that very personal information. P.O. boxes are OUT--yes, we're that vague about where we live. I can set the book up for sale on one of the sites, but I don't want anyone else finding and buying the book (that would sell my friend's part of the story, too, and I would never abuse my friend's trust like that). I also don't want to make my friend pay for it. It's a GIFT, after all.

    Basically, I want to:

-Self-publish a single book and pay the cost

-Pay for the shipping and handling if possible

    And allow my friend to:

-Receive the book without giving me an address

    -Not pay a cent

    And:

-Keep other people (online) from seeing it and unintentionally stealing the gift by buying it.

Is this possible? If so, how would I go about it?

  • Should I get baking chocolate or something else?

I need a chocolate that I can melt and dip pretzels/crackers into, let cool, and still have it be melt-in-your-mouth smooth. I tried "chocolate" candy melts, but the flavor is unsatisfying (tastes like sugar, not cocoa), it doesn't melt in anyone's mouth, and the stuff crumbles and falls off of the pretzel if you bite it. The treats I'm making now would never sell in a bakery/sweets shop, and I like to make my treats at LEAST sell-worthy--mainly because I am far more picky about my cooking than any customer would ever be.

I can only find Baking chocolate in my locals stores, and they're a price I can handle. Is that what I need to buy, or is there a kind/brand of chocolate specifically for melting? Is it affordable?

  • Is one supposed to eat the pickled plum served on ochazuke?

I recently had the unpleasant experience of trying to eat the pickled plum (sometimes referred to as ume or umeboshi?) and subjecting myself to that unique culinary torture (very acidic, somewhat bitter--I've no clue whether that's the norm, or if I'm just too sensitive). I'm starting to wonder if it was just there for decoration and/or seasoning. Is it meant to be eaten?

  • Ditto on Pokemon Platinum has no pokedex number. Hack responsible?

I got one from a friend and I know for a fact that she used action replay to get that one. But then I got one off the GTS and that one didn't have a pokedex number either, which means it never got added to the pokedex. Is this normal, or is a hack responsible and I'll just have to keep trading until I get a genuine one?

  • How can I get the cats-eye look (with contacts) and retain my original eye color?

I've looked up special effects and costume-related contact lens suppliers in search of a lens that will let me keep my original eye color, but they all have yellow or red or acid green irises and that just isn't the look I'm going for. I want the vertical pupils, but not the colors that pop out at you. I want people to be talking with me or whatever for a while before thinking, "Wait a sec, something looks a little unnatural here..."

Is there any company that supplies cats-eye-pupil without the color, or will I have to break the bank and get them custom-painted somewhere? I get that the pupil expanding or contracting could break the illusion, but I can think of a couple ways to keep it looking believable and I can't imagine a contact lens "artist" wouldn't have done the same by this point.

  • Can anyone help me identify this butterfly (no photo available)?

I remember keeping a white fuzzy caterpillar that eventually turned into a white butterfly with vertical red stripes along a fuzzy body. I found the caterpillar on a peppermint plant that I brought home from a nursery in New Jersey, so it could come from that area OR from wherever that nursery got its plants.

I think the caterpillar either started out brown or turned brown before making its cocoon. Also, the plant was kept outdoors, so they could be separate species... But the cocoon was open the morning the butterfly appeared on the plant. The butterfly was (I think) no more than an inch long in any direction, even with its wings spread.

I can't use the online identification sites because all they ask for is the color and patterns and shape of the wings, and I really don't remember anything about those other than that they were mostly white.

  • Cat sick, vomiting--hairballs likely cause?

Found a yellow stain on the carpet. At first I thought there was nothing to worry about, because that's almost the same color as my cat's food. But now there've been 3 vomiting incidents within a 48-hour period, and none of them have had the half-digested chunks of food typical of eating something bad or eating too much, which have been problems in the past. Any ideas?

I was thinking, maybe hairballs? A certain website said that giving him a little petroleum jelly would help with hairballs, but I can't get past the label on the container that says, "External use only. If swallowed get medical help or contact a poison control center immediately." Is it just not dangerous to cats, or am I right to be concerned?

NOTE: My cat has had a history of urinary tract blockage, though I'm not sure if a recurrence would cause frequent vomiting.

ALSO: For those of you who are going to say I should take him to the vet--yeah, that's my next step. I just don't want to be surprised with what they find, if at all possible, and I'd like to help the treatment along.

  • Where can I get long faux fur?

The longest I can find online is 3", and I need something around 6". The nap is the length of the individual "fur" strands, if you don't recognize the term.

  • What does the Japanese word "bikou" mean?

I've heard definitions anywhere from "shadow or gloom" to "delicate incense" to"the mouth and nose of a dog" (muzzle?). Which one's correct, or are they all correct, and if the latter, in which cases are they correct?

  • Are large snakes capable of premeditated murder?

I just heard the story from someone that I don't know very well, so I don't know whether to believe it or not. Normally I couldn't care less, but it was just creepy enough that I have to know.

The story was about a woman who had one of those large, could-swallow-a-human-whole snakes. Apparently the snake had been starving itself long enough that the woman was beginning to worry. She woke up one day and discovered that the snake had escaped and had stretched itself out next to her while she was asleep. She went to her vet and told him about it, and he told her to get rid of the snake immediately because it was planning on eating her, that it had starved itself so that it would be able to swallow her.

Again, this story comes from a source that may or may not be reliable, who in turn heard it from someone else. I want to know if this kind of thing really happens, and maybe how often and under what circumstances. I've always wanted a pet snake, but after that, I'm just freaked out.

  • I want to try my hand at game designing as a hobby. Where do I begin?

I might want to do it professionally later on, but right now I just want to find out if it's even my thing. So what do I do? Do I have to buy special software or machines built for the job? Are there forums I can visit if I have questions? How do game-making hobbyists begin?

  • Rune Factory: How do the monsters help out on the farm?

I know you can get them to water and collect crops, and I know how, but...

    1. Where do the crops go after they've collected them? I couldn't figure that out. And I really need help with collecting; that's the only thing that ever slows me up.

    2. How much can they collect at the highest friendship level? The entire field? Less?

    3. When in the day do they start harvesting? I think it's at 10AM, but I'm not sure.

    4. Can you get more than one to harvest each day? I know they can't harvest at the same time, but maybe one after another?

    Thanks in advance!
