  • What is the point of a one gallon aquarium?

Hi You got a good discussion going. The only thing that I would add is that You want your fish to strive not survive. Always keep that in mind. A Betta can Survive in a cup with proper maintenance yes, but it will not strive. I can survive living in a box, but that would not be my ideal home.

Hi If your set up is a temporary one then I would only have two or three max. The issue is that they can get their finnage hurt when crowded. Watch out for that. They will also grow extremely large only in a few months if given a correct diet.

It's when people stick them in a bowl with cold water and no filter that they start feeling ill and weird things happen. Here read this: http://www.myaquariumclub.com/a-quick-ru... How often do you do water changes? How much do you take out? You never should take out your fish to do a water change. You should never have to do 100% water changes. It is due to interior parasites or other organ failure like the kidneys. http://www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/200... Does your fish have dropsy or is it just bloated? I am glad you cleaned the water. Now just keep cleaning the water every other day. Only remove 1/4 of the water and do not feed for the next few days. His bloating should go down. A bowl is not a suitable home for a Betta fish. A Betta fish needs a 3gallon tank minimum. I have mine in a 5gallon tank and hope to upgrade him to a 10gallon tank. You need a filter. Sponge filters are cheap and work great for Bettas. Please make one and put inside his bowl until you can upgrade him to a bigger tank. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9fT_zoJv... Bettas are tropical fish and need a heater. This helps them digest their food better and have a better immune system so they will not get sick. With bowls you run the risk of cooking your fish. That is why a 5gallon tank with a 25watt heater is best. Here is how to properly change your Bettas water. You should never take your fish out to make a water change. You should never replace all of the water only do a partial water change. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6Re04cYJ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OYY2FEuVAg Here is more info on how to take care of your Betta fish properly. http://www.myaquariumclub.com/myths-and-the-truth-about-betta-care-1894.html

Hi Wow! I would not overstock your tank. I think you need at least a 40-55gallon tank semi-planted to house comfortably the fish you have right now. They area bit squished. Your stock should not be more than 100% check your stock here: http://aqadvisor.com/ Thread carefully when adding aggressive fish to your tank. I would either have the Betta or the Butterfly fish. Both are aggressive and things can go wrong. How long have you had your tank running? The bristle nose Plecos are pushing it. How much filtration do you have? Usually it is one Bristle nose for every 20gallons of water. Same for the Kuhli loach. The bottom of your tank is already overstocked along with the top since you have those two fish up there. Your tank is way way overstocked. Overstocked tanks are problematic in the long run. Double check your stock. The Kribs would probably nip at your Betta. Is your Betta a plakat? Adding more platys to your tank would not be a good idea. If you have had enough experience and are an experienced hobbyist go for it; you have to do more frequent water changes and test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate constantly. If you are just starting out and want more fish get a bigger tank.

Hi Your question is a common question, but I like your question because you want to know why your fish are dying you want to change what you are doing wrong and I like that! You want to learn about fish keeping and I am willing to help a friend in need. This hobby is fun you just have to know the mechanics. I am glad you know how to change your water. :) This might be your causes of death: 1. You have too many fish. Each fish has individual needs that you need to meet. For example, Goldfish are cheap, but can grow 8-inches up 3 feet depending on the type of Goldfish. You are responsible for getting the right size of tank; if you put too many fish in the tank your fish will die. The fish you have, for example, are live bearers. They will over populate the tank quickly as they are pooping out kinds like you eat candy. For this type of fish you need a minimum of a 20gallon tank. A 20 gallon tank Long is even better. So a 20 gallon or bigger is best. Check out Craigslist for cheap big used tanks. 72F is a bit too cold trust me a few degrees matter. You need to get a 100-150watt heater. Get your temp to @77F :) Fish digest their food better when warm and they have a better immune system. The bigger your tank the more stable it is. Here check your stock here (plug in your numbers!) http://aqadvisor.com/ Your stock should not be more than 100% 2. You need to cycle the tank. Many people will tell you this, but then your like "what does cyling mean?" So here it is in short :) So you go home put in your new fish and they are happy :) You feed them and they eat and swim around. (By the way feeding them one a day is fine; do not over feed especially if your tank is not cycled). After about the 3rd day or at the end of the week you see your fish acting funny and dying. So you do a water change, but they still keep dying. Do you know why they keep dying? You feed your fish right? Well they will also poop. The fish swim and live in their own poop. This poop and other waste is called ammonia. Ammonia kills your fish. So how do fish live for years in tanks? There is this little beneficial bacteria that breaks down/eats the poop. Making your tank a happy and healthy home for your fish to live in. The downside is that these cool guys (beneficial bacteria) take a while to establish in your tank (@3weeks depending on tank set up). So what can you do so that your fish stop dying? (I highly encourage you to get Prime Seachem Prime as you water conditioner. Best one out there). Simple. Do more water changes more frequently and do not feed too much. Do every other day 25-35% water changes. Trust me doing water changes more frequently will keep your fish alive until the tank cycles. When I say until the tank cycles I mean until the beneficial bacteria get established and they can eat all the poop that your fish are producing daily. During this cycling process (the beneficial bacteria is growing to eat the poop) do not touch your filter pad. That is where the beneficial bacteria will colonize primarily. Always swish your aquarium pad in water you have taken out from the tank to clean it if it needs cleaning. Other than that do no touch your filter pad/media/beneficial bacteria. In this hobby you have to learn how to take care of this beneficial bacteria so that your fish will not die. So do water changes for @3-4weeks strait or so. Do not miss a water change or else your fish can and will die. If you have any questions about your fish tank stock or the cycling process just e-mail me I can help you. Happy fish keeping mate!

That way the Oscars don't get too territorial and give the sharks enough time to be comfortable. You might have to grow them in a stock tank before you put them in your tank. The Oscars will harass and take chunks out of them. :/ I am not sure. You can try and if does not work just take them back out. Grow them out and put them back in the main tank. Good luck.

I would suggest a few fish that are small and would fit very well in a 10g tank. Do not overstock your tank! That is one mistake you don't want to do! The more fish you put in, the more poop you will have, the more water you will have to change. For your bottom dwellers you can get the following (pick one or the other or both, but do not overcrowd your tank). Bottom dweller Invertebrates: 2-3 Horned Nerite snails: they are small, don't reproduce in freshwater, and help with the algae. Cherry Red Shrimp: You can have as much as 20+in your 10g since these dudes do not poop too much. 2 Mystery Snails: They also clean and are really interesting to have; they do not self reproduce; you need both male and female to reproduce. Bottom dweller fish: A school of 6+ pigmy Cory cats. These dudes are small unlike the other Cory cats. As for a school of small fish I would go with a dwarf rasbora. A school of them would really go well in a 10g tank. You can have up to @8+ of them or more. A 10g tank is really small. I have way bigger tanks than a 10g and do own a 10g tank. I like to give my fish a lot of room so I have one Betta Fish in a 10g tank. Check your stock here: http://aqadvisor.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY2UT3FJGds Good luck with your choice!
