Describe the types of networks available and how they relate to different standards and protocols?

We have been asked to complete this question but havn't got a clue where to start. Would someone be able to help me structure a response. Initially I was going to describe:
Types of networks available eg LAN, WAN, MAN
Physical topologies - star, ring, bus, mesh
Logical topolgies - shared media, token based
Network models - TCP/IP etc
But Im not sure if this would be correct. Because it doesn't really explain how the types networks relate to different standards and protocol. Any help would be very much appreciated.
