Do American's know of anywhere outside of London?

We know of California, LA, Chicago etc but do they really know of anywhere in Great Britain outside of London?

I'm from Newcastle, myself, and seriously doubt they'd know of it. Infact, they'd probably think I was Australian...yikes.

Additional Details

I guess it's because most British people believe people from the US to be ignorant.

What disappoints me about the majority of tourists who come to the U.K., not only Americans, is that few travel outside London or major cities like Edinburgh, Bath etc. The best thing about Britain
is the beauty of the countryside, villages and ancient market towns like Ludlow (Shropshire) that rarely appear in tourist guides. Quite apart from the many national parks the whole country is full of
long distance footpaths (walking trails). If you don't like hiking buy the good value 'Britrail Pass'
www.britrail.com before arrival and take advantage of the frequency and density of our national rail system to really see the country, and don't just obediently visit the lists of well worn sites in the guide books. Do some research and find places that will really interest and stimulate you

I think the main problem is that most American citizens don't even own a passport due to the fact that their country is so huge so they mainly go on holiday in their own country.

I always applaud Americans who make it over the pond.

Yes, they mainly head for London but so do most foreign tourists. I'm sure they've heard of Scotland but when I lived in Texas (I'm scottish) we did get asked the following questions:

"do y'all live in a castle?"
"why are you not wearing a kilt?"
"do you have houses there or do you sleep in the heather?"

Films like Braveheart make them think like that.

Well, I'm American and know many places in the UK.
Most Americans don't know many places though just because
they always travel within the country.
Not all of us are ignorant, just a handful of us, I guess >.>

No, there is a small population out there that could tell you more. But seeing as you're on the "other side of pond", I can't expect you to understand why we don't understand. The English I've noticed are quite judgmental, and yes, American's can be VERY dumb, but so are people from any other country. Because nearly everywhere is becoming 'Americanized' you're more sick of us than any other country and see what is projected on the t.v. as actual "Americans". Most of the citizen trash that is shown on your television sets are people looked down upon here as well, we're not idolizing them for being on t.v. and looking stupid. The media forces celebrity garbage down our throats like you wouldn't believe, and just because you hear the fans of that garbage doesn't mean everyone is crazy for Lady Gaga or any other piece of sh*t.
Yes there are MANY people here who could not tell you much about England or the UK in general because something like that would almost be considered a "side project" because you do the research on your own. No one tells us much of anything about England unless you do the work yourself. Unlike the UK who grow up learning of America and knowing the countries surrounding the UK because it is essential, American children aren't as lucky. Geography doesn't come naturally because it is not something we learn until high school. Sad but true.

Now, let's be honest, there are some real dumbasses in your country as well. There are dumbasses the world over, but that doesn't mean we need to crucify them at the stake because we "know more". Being a snob b*tch isn't helping anyone, so anyone who thinks they are better than everyone else needs to wake up. NEWSFLASH: you're not.
We also don't have much reason to learn much about travel, seeing as no one ever has the money or interest to travel. A "big vacation" to an American is what you consider a small one. Thus the Americans that invade England only have the time and money to look at the major tourist attractions and leave as fast as they can so they don't miss a day of work or else they'll be fired. So yeah, with no time and little money, you only have time to cram before you visit. This is why so many come off as dumbasses. (unless they are natural dumbasses, differentiate between the two before you judge!)
Plus, you're accent doesn't help us any! lol Girls become such floozies for English accents, and I don't care what you say, girls from EVERY COUNTRY become sluts, so stop saying it is just the Americans.

You're a nice person and your question is not extremely rude or anything, so sorry for such an awful, long rant! :X Just thought I would let the cat out of the bag. :)

P.S. LA is in California. And your question is hypocritical because those are only major tourist destinations just like Bath, London, Liverpool, etc. I'm not asking you to know every little town outside the big cities because that's ridiculous! And all you listed was California and Chicago, so don't think your question doesn't go both ways!
