I wouldn't know which story to mention. Im writing a book from when i served in the Army to when i backpacked around the world for 3 years. I would have to say getting lost in Laos is one of my travel story favorites. Myself and a mate took a moto through a rough jungle track in hope of reaching Luang Prabang. It became dark and a storm wasn't far off. The map we had fell to peaces from the rain and constant use therefore making it unreadable. If that wasn't bad enough then the motto breaking down was as we were forced to stay put and find shelter for the night. By morning we were pushing the moto down the track for a day and it wasn't until that night we came across a small village along the Mekong River who were willing to have us for the night with a welcoming rice whiskey and a feed. In the morning after having the tools to look at the moto we realized it was unrepairable there so we cut our loses and traded it in for a Canoe/Kayak/DIY boat and two bottles of 50% rice whiskey. The good news is that Luang Prabang was about 20hrs down stream so off we went. The sights were amazing and there were many villages and wildlife along the mekong. The rice whiskey went down well and we had a laugh playing silly buggers going backwards down some light rapids, cheering and singing our way downstream until one of use thought it was a good idea to try it standing while the other drives and falls into the river. We stopped in another village in where we got shelter and some more food before continuing on the following morning. By sun set the following day we made it to the sights of something larger than a village along the mekong - Luang Prabang. From there with the loss of our moto we decided to take a bus from then on.

If you want an adventure of a life time then go do something different. Go off the beaten track, take some risks, be well equipped and prepared to go the extra mile in a different country all together. Its not always easy, but the memories will last a life time.

I went traveling to the Eastern Block of countries in Europe right after the wall came down in Berlin. The guards were still stationed at towers with rifles. We were told what highway we could drive on and what time of day. We were told where we could spend the night and we had to leave our passports at the front desk every night so that the police could stamp them.

We didn't speak any of the languages (German, Czech, etc) and we had guns pointed at us several times. It was quite an adventure.
