get a travel card.
don't bother with the open top bus tours. Just jump on a number 11 bus at victoria station (make sure it's going to liverpool street!). This bus will take you past the front of westminster abbey, Parliment square, Horseguards parade, Trafalgar Square, The Savoy hotel, The law courts (old bailey), St pauls Cathedral, Thread needle street (home of the bank of england), and finaly Liverpool street station (jump on the tube for a short ride to the tower of london, HMS Belfast and St Katherines Dock.
This bus route passes very close to other major attractions aswell. Leicester square and covent garden is just a short walk from trafalgar square, as is the palace (go under admiralty arch and gaze down the mall at the palace. There are many many more things to do and see of this bus route, and only the locals know about it!

there's the open top tourist buses which give you an easy way to see around all the major sites ... there's several companies, such as
    www.bigbustours.com
    www.theoriginaltour.com
    www.city-sightseeing.com
once you know where you want to go back to, the public transport system is very easy to use ... here's the tube map
    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/s…
and details of tickets, prices etc
    http://www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/tr…
be warned though that there is no public transport on Christmas Day, 25 December ... also on that day taxis will charge a premium, probably twice their normal fare ... so if you want to go out and about that day you're probably better walking ... although where you'd go to is a problem as nothing much will be open

There is no public transport on Christmas Day, and businesses and attractions are closed as are most shops. If your hotel has a restaurant, please make sure you book lunch for that day, other you'll starve.
The rest of your visit you should use the tube.

You can buy one or three day travel pass that will take you around the central area by tube 9 london Underground) and by Bus. Check out the Central london transport site for the maps and cost of these tickets. You can buy them at all underground stations- like Kings cross :-)

    www.tfl.gov.uk

As someone has already metnioned, most public transport will not operate on Christmasday, but there will be people out & about in the City & West End of London.

A bus tour can start from about £20 per person- there are those you can hop on and off for two days. Check out www.theoriginaltour.com for one. Again, this may not run on Christmas day.

    Enjoy your time in London

The Underground and all buses don't run on Christmas Day, taxis charge a large premium (probably double or triple fare). Normally the best way to get around is by Underground or Bus, if you buy an Oyster card and load it with prepay credit there's a daily limit so you'll never be charged more than that (just make sure you touch in and out) especially if you just stay in central London. You can pick up an Oyster Card at any underground station, there's a £3 deposit but this is returnable once you return your card. There's lots of Tourist information offices around London.

The nearest station to Big Ben is Westminster and this is also the nearest station to Westminster Abbey, Downing Street and is within walking distance of Buckingham Palace.

There are a number of tours by bus:

    Big Bus tours - http://www.bigbustours.com/eng/london/de…
London Duck Tours - both on land and the River - http://www.londonducktours.co.uk/
The Original London Sightseeing Tour - http://www.theoriginaltour.com/

Please note that these tours will cost extra on top of other travel and you will not get a discount with an Oyster Card.

the tube starts winding down at around 21.00 on christmas eve and doesn't start until about 07.00 0n boxing day I'm not sure about the buses but I know there is no service on christmas day, mini cabs charge double fare on christmas day . I wouldn't suggest getting a 3 day travel card they are too expensive 3x1 day travelcards are cheaper an oyster card is cheaper still.
