Your subject title says you can't speak English, so how would you plan to teach it then. I doubt that you are qualified to be a teacher just from reading this question. I think both you and Thai students would be better off it you find other work in Thailand.

I agree with Lek, English teaching jobs almost always require that you a native English speaker or at least have total command of the language.

I think you mean, "teaching English (in Thailand) when you can't speak Thai".
It is true, if you are qualified. Equip with Teaching Degree, Bachelor Degree in
Education and also TESOL Certificate. The pay is not really high, but will be enough
to live by. You will surely enjoy Thailand, with its friendly people and simple lifestyle and carefree living!

Yes, you need a work permit. To get one, you need to apply for a Non Immigrant 'B' visa in your country. This application has to be supported by your employer. Upon arrival you go to the labor office and get your workpermit.

In order to become a teacher you need teaching qualifications and a good conduct statement from the police in your hometown.

You can find a job as a teacher without the above, but ... those school are breaking the law. Usually they will pay a lot less. Or insist you work much longer hours.

Getting a job as a teacher of English being a non native speaker is though. Without teaching qualifications, I wouldn't even waste my time trying.

Paul, even if you have a fairly good understanding of he English language, you will find work easily.

Your pay rate may not be very exciting though, I would expect no more then 50,000 Baht a month which is very very low. I lived in Thailand for 2 years and spent 120,000 Baht a week.

Info on living and working in Thailand can be found on my site.

Teaching english while you can't speak english ? Everything OK with you ?

You can do all sorts of voluntary jobs, I do some internet marketing, just few minutes per day for the local university and this gives me the right for a yearvisa and workpermit.

Most is teaching english, but also lot of webdesign etc. Thais are terrible webdesigners so foreigners are welcome for this kind of jobs. What are you good in ?

You can't have a real job if you not have a workpermit, you should do a simple voluntairy job for getting the workpermit. Don't expect an impressing salary here anyway. Some live from selling stuff on Ebay, I just start trying this but still did not sell anything yet, might take long time and many trials before it eventually starts running.

Teaching English when you can't speak English is widespread in Thailand. Most of the public schools do it. The so-called English teachers are Thai native speakers who can't speak English at all. They just follow a cook book approach and pass all the students. Hence the sorry state of English in Thailand.

As a foreigner, however, you probably can't do it because you wouldn't get a job with a public school.
