Any ideas for voluntary work over Christmas (and beyond)?

Can't seem to find much information online - I'm in Waterford city and new to the area - can you think of any local charities, organisations etc that may be looking for help this festive season?

At a bit of a loose end this Christmas and have already registered for volunteer opportunities at www.volunteer.ie - but, in the meantime, any suggestions?

Additional Details

Nikki - Thanks, my first thought was of the homeless, don't think it's a huge problem here but I will look into it - I would love to help financially, at the moment though, all I have to give is my time!

Ludwig - The category I posted under may supply a clue!

You could get in touch with the St. Vincent De Paul as they are always looking for volunteers as it is a busy time of the year for them..Also the Samaritans but think you need to get training first for that...Maybe also try the local hospital as they may need volunteers to help out for the people who will be in hospital over Christmas...am sure your help would be appreciated ...

Thanks. I don't think I have I have mental/emotional toughness for the Samaritans anyway! Of course, St. Vincent De Paul, will look into that!

maybe if your city is small you might need to travel to a larger city for a while and search there... but im sure that there are homeless people where you live and hungry people-maybe start small and help them... or help your friends that you know are less fortunate then you... that can be done all year though... for especially christmas my family has this favorite waitress at Denny's and she has a really rough life but works hard and we all give her a money gift at christmas...maybe instead of you giving gifts to your friends and families you can find families that don't have enough money to spare to buy even a single gift for there family and you can be their miracle... best wishes in deciding what to do-be creative:))

i have no doubt any church would be able to give you the names etc, of people who would like to attend church over the christmas season but are unable to due to disability and who cannot drive , of course you would need to be able to drive yourself, to do this , i am thinking about midnight service or early morning christmas day service, and maybe even taking people to meet relatives again churches will give names of lonely infirm people who will see no one on christmas day or the festive season, this way you will celebrate christmas in the true christian manner.GOOD LUCK. and Merry Xmas to YOU.
