Can someone explain the Irish health care system to me? In particular how if differs from the NHS in the UK?

An aunt has been subjected to the most appalling and bizarre care over the weekend and I just want to get my facts straight on possible reasons for that. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Haz, very sorry to hear that.

I've had some terrible experiences with the heath system here re. my mum and dad...not the place to talk of that here.

On the whole, the care from the nursing staff and doctors on the wards has been excellent - but the system here suffers from the same problems as the NHS, but more so; long waiting lists, lack of beds, lack of facilities in regional hospitals, MRSA scares etc.

Without knowing your specific concerns regarding your aunt, I can only give you these links and hope you can find what you're looking for:

Aaah stop being lovely and making me blub :(
Thanks for this I was getting nowhere trying to Google it.
Not impressed with a health service that leaves a woman in bed at home for a week with a brain haemorrhage. Grr.
Sorry for stirring bad memories x

Cheers all x

I don't know, but the NHS helped to kill my grandad, and also gave my dad an infection from their disgusting rooms, and lack of hygiene, which killed him, he had cancer and because the kemo lowers your immune system he picked up the infection and that killed him.
    yep.
    murderers. i'll never forgive them.
    we're complaining.

Its pretty crappy compared to the NHS , ( I have experienced both ) , First point is your gp , without a medical card you grt charged , from € 45 up to € 80 for a visit . Casualty carries a fee of € 100 , wavered if you have a GP.letter , on a public waiting list , for anything , pull the ticket and wait up yo 3 yrs , pay private , ie , BUPA , QUINN , or VHI , jump the queue and get seen in a private wing of a state hospital nearly straight away . Money talks here when it comes to medical care
