Is Belfast becoming less safe?

With the incident at Belfast Police Station last week, are Belfast and NI still safe for tourism? The police station is located right in the city centre. Also the Masserene Barracks incident does not help.

Additional Details

I am going to Belfast for holiday next January, and the fact that I would be walking round the city centre, close to the Police Station, makes me slightly uncomfortable considering the incident last week.

Well I have lived here all my life and never had any problems.

There are incidents everywhere in the world every day, it doesn't stop us from travelling, does it?

Belfast is as safe , if not safer, than any other city in the world. We walk past and live near police stations all our lives and we are still here. We have very little gun and knife crime compared to other places. Come to belfast and do not worry

I have lived in Belfast the last 9 months for work.

It is much much safer than London or Glasgow. Personally I would say it is one of the Safest Cities in Europe.

I would say it is Safer than Dublin - Dublin has more of an Edge - especially at Weekends.

Plus the People are friendly - I would recommend it to anyone - Good Craic.

I was giving a workmate a lift home one night and he said the City was safer in the Past(yes even during the Troubles) - but you would never have got Police in Foot Patrols, in the Past - Like in The HolyLands Area or West Belfast.

The Only Time to Avoid to Belfast is during The Orange Parades around the 12th July. The rest of the year it is pretty safe.

These Bomb Attacks are by being Undertaken by Splinter Nationalist Groups who are trying to derail the Peace Process. Hopefully It will stay on Track.

I used to live in just outside of Belfast for about 8 months about a year ago now so I can give you quite a good insight into what its like here. Honestly and this is coming from an English person Belfast is really quite safe, I never once felt under threat while in Belfast and apart from some harmless banter I could watch England play football in Wetherspoons which is something I would think twice about in Scotland or Wales. I think people think violence is rife in NI because of the media attention it gets, like you hear about the attacks at Masserene Barracks but incidents like that are rare now. As a tourist you are much likely to be mugged, robbed, raped etc in most other Cities in the UK than you are in Belfast its just that they dont get the coverage that incidents in NI do.

Honestly relax, its really quite a nice place.

don't listen to that answerer who said to avoid belfast on the 12th of july he is being a bigot you have as much chance of trouble on st paddys day. i wouldn't worry about coming over in january there are incidences yes but they are mostly targetting psni members and not civilians hopefully
