From reading your question, I have my suspicions as to whether you actually drive an articulated vehicle for a living as you would know about the "Marco Polo Project" (Motorways of the Sea). as most if not all vehicles travelling through France to Spain from the UK use one of the ferry services provided as that method allows the haulage company to reduce their overheads, the same applies to vehicles from Northern Europe. Said method also provides the driver with the necessary mandatory rest periods. Another point being these services provide a method of circumventing the HGV ban that applies in France and Spain at weekends and peak holiday periods.

If you take the advice given in the previous reply you will come horribly unstuck as it is somewhat incorrect to the point of being dangerous. You will probably end up with a mountain of fines, payable on the spot or your vehicle is impounded, demolishing the car park of the hotels mentioned and probably wrecking a small town. HGV’s are required to use “Routiers”, special parking and accommodation sites for the road transport industry.

If you really want truthful accurate information from a reliable source then you should contact one of the major trade associations or a major transport planning company that has up to date guaranteed information at their fingertips – be prepared to pay – a fully laden articulated vehicle in the wrong hands in a lethal weapon.

Read from this forum. There are many different ways including a direct ferry.

Your shipping route UK- France depends on where you live. South-East, use Dover,
    anywhere else use Poole/Portsmouth etc.

From South Coast ports, aim for Bordeaux first day, destination midday second. French
and Spanish roads FAR less congested than British roads. Much easier driving.

At a guess (I drive an articulated lorry so I pay more) you will pay £40 in motorway
tolls. I will look up the amount for car and caravan tomorrow.

According to the AA route planner, Calais/Estartit is 1232 Km, whilst Bilbao/Estartit
is 725 Km, so it rather depends on the amount of driving one is happy to do, and on
how many overnight breaks one would want to include in the longer journey.

I'm not doubting at all what you say: but I suspect the difference in cost of the two
routes -- including overnight stays, meals, additional petrol -- is lower than it
    might first appear to be.

Well, I drive a truck, so I always used the freight-only service from
Poole-Cherbourg, or Soton- Caen. But they are all the same. As a car driver, you will
have a far greater choice. Essentially, it`s a day-and-a-half to where you are going.

From Cherbourg/ Caen you can get to Bordeaux area within a 10 hour drive (for a 56mph
truck driver- in a car, it takes less) Plenty of hotels (Formule 1, Arcotel, etc) for
less than £20 per room per night. For a whole family.

The most important point is that you should just go for it- believe me, it`s far
easier than a drive around the M25 on any day of the week.

If you are asking this question you should doing the homework yourself its your truck.
Car down to Barcelona from Dunkirk will cost around 100 euros in tolls double that for a truck, that is if you go the main truck route Reims, Dijon, Nimes and turn right for Spain and 2 and half days drive. Forget Formule 1 hotels or the others mentioned as the cheapest is 37euros a night and their parks are for cars and vans not trucks you won't get in some of them with a 20ft trailer let alone a 40-45 footer. Watch out for the speed cameras they don't paint theirs yellow and put signs up.
