What are the short (3 - 4 days) holiday options in Scotland during the last two weeks of Dec?

I am from India and my family is taking a two week vacation in London during the last 2 weeks of Dec. wanted to explore the possibilities of taking off to Scotland for a few days in between to experience Scotland - have a good train ride, to see snow (doubt if it snows this time of the year), the villages, the cottages etc... Maybe a home stay to experience the village life in Scotland. Any recommendation?

Edinburgh is worth visiting. It is a beautiful historic city, complete with a large castle.

If you want snow, your best bet would be the Cairngorms.
