Yes and No!
As a British citizen you only need any type of picture ID if you plan to fly. Some airlines like easyjet, Eastern Airways or Flybe accept an expired passport [not expired longer than two years] as ID for domestic flights.

Others require any type of ID to be valid; if you plan to fly you will need to check the terms and conditions of the airline.

If you plan to fly on Ryanair you will need a valid passport since they do not accept any other form of ID (except national ID cards from EU citizens).

You don't need a passport if you plan to drive, ride or walk.

The new Border Patrol Initiative between Scotland and her inferior neighbour, England, came into force on 25 Nov 2009.
They absolutely insist that everyone must have an electronic passport to cross the border if they're crossing TO the foreign part of the land mass. If you're Scottish and wish to travel to England, then you can pass freely with a new electronic (biometric) passport. However, as your passport is out of date, then they will NOT allow you to pass into England - but they would allow you to pass back into Scotland if you were coming from the English side. Obviously, the same applies to English people wishing to sample a better country.

There are now new train stations in the 'no-man's land between the great country and her southerly neighbour and all trains are required to make a stop there to allow illegals to be removed. They are currently doing all that work in the existing airports, but I am aware of plans to build 'inspection' airports near the new train stations. Road travel between the two countries will be phased out by 2014.

Good luck - and Bon Voyage.
(Flying -current passport advised, other means, no.)

I'm fully English. btw, just writing from a Scottish perspective this morning...what? It's my life - can do what I want!

Edit: At least John M down there has a sense of humour and could see a joke...

As I live in the wilds of Scotland and know it can sometimes seem like the dark side of the moon we still don't need passports to get out of the place unless going abroad.

    Technically yes and no.

You do NOT need a passport to fly between Glasgow and London as both are in the United Kingdom. However you DO need some form of photographic ID. The photographic ID must be in date and fully valid.

An out of date passport will NOT be accepted for travel.

A Driving Licence will be accepted as will a Provisional Driving Licence. if you have neither of these then you will need to get a new passport.
