I have just looked at your previous questions and you say that you are in NY which is presumably New York. If that is the case then yes, you would most certainly need a passport to go to Ireland, in fact you would need one to be able to leave the US, and if you did not have a passport you most certainly would not be able to get back into your own country.

If you are travelling from the U.K. then you don't. However a passport is always useful for identification purposes whilst in the country.

When I used to travel to Ireland on the ferry, there were no custom checks at all for people on foot. I imagine that will have changed now with so many immigrants trying to get into Ireland at the moment.

What nationality are you? Where are you travelling from?

The quickest & simplest answer is yes, since a number of airlines insist on a passport as ID regardless of where you're travelling from and for international travel a passport is required.

Certain non-EU nationals also require a visa to enter the Republic of Ireland even if they're only going on holiday.

Yes you do, unless you are flying from Britain and NOT with Ryanair, however to be on the safe side, I would bring my passport anyway. Better safe than sorry.

If you are a UK citizen or a foreign citizen that doesn't require visa to Ireland, then you need a passport whether you are flying or going on a ferry, because they will ask for ID. For UK citizens you could get away with a driving licence, but on the safe side, take a passport.

If you're travelling from Northern Ireland (part of UK) to Republic of Ireland by train or car, there will be no border controls. Therefore there isn't a necessity to carry a passport. At the moment the UK government is thinking of maybe introducing border controls, but at this stage, its only a theory and this has not been implemented.

Well it would help if you said where you were travelling from and if you are flying or coming on the ferry. The short answer is if you are flying yes you do. If you are travelling by ferry they may accept other forms of photo ID but its best to check with the ferry company's website.
