What was the point in the world's first airport?

I just read that the world's first airport was opened in 1928 in Croydon, south London. What would have been the point in that? Surely you need at least 2 airports for there to a point. Where could you have flown to, except out of Croydon, and back again?

It may have been the first airport but it wasn't the only place you could land a plane. before 1928 it was an RAF airfield, of which i'm sure there were no shortage of after the first world war. So although they couldn't have flown to another airport there would have been other airfields to fly to.

The first airfield will have been built for the RAF which existed before commercial flights, they of course would have no need for a second airfield to land in as they weren't generally flying to another destination.
