Visa requirements outside Sh-arm?

Question

My family are off to Sh-arm this Christmas, we are staying at Nabq Bay, my question, I understand that no visa is required, unless travelling to Cairo, we don't intend doing so, but I would like to know how far afield we can go on excursions without the need for a visa?

It would be wise to get a visa if you intend to do any trips even if that doesn't include Cairo, you even need one if you decide to go out on a boat trip.
