Best Neighbourhoods to live in Manchester on a tight budget?

I've just graduated from school and am starting my first professional job which means I'll be on a budget. What are the best neighbourhoods I should look into? Location is most important to me in terms of what is around, and how close I am to the city centre.

it depends how close you want to be. Hindley is a reasonable priced area, and there is a train station that will take you to the city centre in about half an hour. It's part of Wigan, and has quite a few small towns near by.

On the North side, parts of Prestwich and Whitefield are still good, and on the Metro line.
Also , Blackley is improving, esp near Boggart Hole Clough
I am a fan of Middleton, esp the conservation area on Long St, Rhodes, with its nice fishing lodges, and Alkrington
Very affordable and cosmopolitan is Crumpsall, also on the Metro line. Lots of cheap bedsits here
The south side of the city tends to be expensive, but students live in Rusholme and Fallowfield, so you'd get something there. Or even Longsight, if you like ' urban' living. 192 bus from here, only 20 mins from town
Some parts of Salford are cheap ; Higher or Lower Broughton or Pendleton, again, on top of the city

Bury and it's districts (like the southern ones of Prestwich and Whitefield) would be a good choice.

Although Bury town centre is ten miles from Manchester it is connected by the Metrolink system which makes it a 20 - 25 minute journey.

Bury also has the lowest crime rate of all the boroughs of Greater Manchester,

Droylsden in Tameside is ok, its not too far from the city center, it takes 10 mins to get there on a bus (on a good day.) Droylsden is a pretty nice town and its having new fancie apartments being built right now. The town center has most things you'll need it has tesco, 4 banks (lloyds TSB, nat west, hallifax and the bank of scotland) sainburys and lots of other conviniant stores.

Also it only a short bus ride to Ashton which is like a smaller version of manchester city center ( it has cinimas and bowling to :P)

ohh and droylsden is known for being a much better place to live in terms of crime than pretty much any where in actual manchester.
