My daughter went there from 1995-1998, studying archaeology. It is not as hard to get into a one of the "red-brick" Universities, but she got the degree she wanted.
There was a mix of people there from all over the UK and they occasionally have reunions. Yes, it was very friendly, and socially it was one of the best times of her life.
I am talking about 14 years ago, when she was resident in Halls. Things may have improved now. Accommodation was very basic, and the catering was poor. After the first year, students move out into rented houses, so there is more choice.
No beach very close, but trains along the South Wales coast run like buses, so it is easy to get to a beach. Carmarthen has regular bus services, and the town is a good shopping centre.
