Should I be worried about going to Brixton at night?

I am going to the 02 academy in Brixton and am a little worried about being there at night.

Now, please don't take this as me being offensive about Brixton, I have never been there before so have no opinion, other than what the media portrays.

Is the academy quite close to tube links? Would we be able to get a taxi outside the venue when the gig has finished?

Thanks in advance.

The Academy is about 2 minutes walk from Brixton tube. When there's a gig on, there's thousands of people milling about and is completely safe. You might be able to get a taxi but tube or bus is your best bet as there isn't really a taxi rank there and I don't know if the mini cab companies are licensed.

Now, if you said you were going down Coldharbour Lane on your way to Camberwell on your own at 2am, I would be worried about you - this is the bit of Brixton that has the problems, not the bit near the Academy. Safe as anything.

You'll be fine, the Academy is close enough to the tube station and is down a main street. You come out of the tube station and will have to walk past some shops, pubs and clubs and cross the road and you are there. Coming back will be fine as there will be hundreds of people travelling from the Academy to the station and you cant really get lost. You wont really be able to get a taxi from outside the venue, but it wont be necessary as it's only down the road to the station. Just stay with a group if you are nervous and don't go wandering off, it's not a particularly dodgy area or anything so is really nothing to worry about.

Are you going this Friday? I will be there lol.

I live round the area and would say you'll be fine when there is a gig on. The tube station is seconds away from the Academy so you won't need a taxi to get to & from the station. Brixton isn't the greatest of areas but it's not the worst either- it has a negative portrayal in the media because of the racial riots decades ago.

About ten years ago, I wouldn't've gone to Brixton BY DAY, hon, let alone by bleedin' night! However, that's all changed again now- Brixton's as good as gold nowadays, my sweet. You'll be just fine down there, hon! Peace and love! Be lucky! :)
