The Theatre Museum in Covent Garden is really fun, there are lots things to get involved in as well as information about how theatre has developed. Its easy to get to and make a great day out :) And its free!

National Museum was great. And it's even free to enter!

Madame Tussaud's was also not bad but still pretty disappointing for what it costs.

If you head to South Kensington tube station, there are 3 of London's biggest museums all next to each other through the walkway. The Science Museum (including huge hands on kids area and IMAX cinema), the Natural History Museum (with huge dinosaur exhibition) and the V&A Museum.

These are all free - extra fee for IMAX and special exhibitions.

The Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green is wonderful and you spend ages going "oooh I had one of those when I was a kid", there is an area for kids to play in and a beautiful collection of Victorian dolls' houses.

The Maritime Museum in Greenwich adjacent to the Greenwich time line and Observatory is well worth a look. It's huge and features the actual clothes that Nelson died in.

The British Museum (nearest tube Tottenham Court Road) houses the Rosetta Stone, a huge hall of Egyptian treasures and endless artifacts from history.

Not a museum but worth a look are the National Gallery (Van Gogh's sunflowers are there) and the Tate Modern (huge building filled with modern art and sculpture).

One of the best things about the London museums are the monthly late night openings that several of them have. The best are the V&A and the design museum. These late night openings will have workshops and activities that you can get involved in and will have bars & DJ's. The best that I have been to was at the design museum, which was sponsored by Beefeater Gin, so had free cocktails. There was also an area where you could make lampshades, and an area where you could make accessories. The Tate Modern often has interesting events like this too, and is a stunning art gallery.

The Natural History Museum is an amazing building, and having the three Museums (Nat History, Science, V & A, beside each other, and all free is quite amazing). The V&A has a huge collection, and is in a stunning building that you will not be able to explore all of. It also has an excellent cafe, which is spread through three incredible rooms. It often has good interactive art in the courtyard too.

The British Museum is huge, in a spectacular building and houses an enourmous collection of antiquities. There is a huge amount to explore here, the Egyptian Hall is one of the highlights.

The Wallace Collection is a small museum behind Selfridges in Marylebone, which is my pick of the smaller Museums.

I second the Wallace Collection at Hertford House, it's very personable and roomy - never too crowded. For art, furniture, ceramics and armour/weapons it's hard to beat.

Also The John Soane Museum in Lincoln's Inn is an unusual, but interesting visit - the place is crammed with architectural pieces. Especially the candlelight tours. It's free during the daytime.

The British, V&A, Science and Natural History are all worth a visit. I also agree with the Imperial War Museum suggestion.

Galleries - try the Tate Britain at Millbank, really interesting British Art from 1500 to present.

Also - the Horniman Museum - is further out, at Forest Hill, but is a big hit with visitors. Very unusual natural history collection.
