Cheap and quick transport to Scotland from Leicester?

Want to go in February, not really fussed where to although Inverness would be preferable.

Ryan-air used to do tickets £9 each way, now they don't appear to even serve Inverness, is there any known plans to bring them back in the new year?

You're looking at a 5 hour train journey to Edinburgh (change at Derby on most services) or 9 hours to Inverness (change at Derby and Edinburgh). Cheap fares should be available if you book well in advance www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk www.railcard.co.uk
