Can anyone advise on holiday to egypt?

I am trying to book a surprise holiday for my husband to egypt. I live in scotland in UK. I want to fly from a scottish airport if possible as we are only going for 1 week.
My husband would love to see the pyramids etc and i was told that luxor would be the best place to stay. However when i get a quote for prices at luxor they are double that of for example sharm el sheikh and have to change flights in London.
Can anyone advise if it is possible to still visit all the pyramids etc from sharm el sheikh ?
would it be more economical staying there or is luxor the best?
cheers

i am really surprised that you are finding the prices so much higher to get to luxor its usually cheaper, but you have several problems here.
Firstly the pyramids are in cairo which is a long way form luxor either an hours flight or an overnight train ride. or if you stay in sharm el sheik a 4 hour uncomfortable coach ride each way or short flight.
Luxor is almost certainly the best place to stay if you want to see many ancient sites. The valley of the kings, Queens and nobles as well as the temples of Karnak, luxor and hatshepsut to name some of the days out.
Sharm el sheik and the other redsea resorts are really best for diving and snorkeling. Sharm in particular is expensive the prices in restaurants and nights out are higher than many places in cairo and considerably higher than luxor. Also your day out in cairo to see the pyramids and museum will also be expensive and very tiring. Honestly if its ancient sites you want i would recommend luxor. Is it possible for you to travel to manchester, i know the luxor flights are a pain you will only find them on mondays Monarch and wednesdays Thompson fly there are other flights but again only on those days. But you could as i do travel to manchester on sunday stay in a cheaper hotel for the night and fly in the morning, the flights usually leave about 9am and on your return you will be back about 10pm and again i would recommend staying in Manchester and returning home the next day. I know it seems more expensive but when you add to your sharm holiday the cost of trips out to restaurants and a day out to cairo about £100 each, but check the web sites. eating out in luxor by the way can be very cheap a main course of steak and chips or similar about £5 maximum. stay in one of the hotels in town then you will not be paying too much in taxis. Make your own arrangements to see the sites easy to hire a taxi and cheap to take you to the site. and much cheaper than the tour operators. please e mail if you want more info i do know all 3 places quite well.

There are no pyramids in Luxor.....why not have a stay in Giza (Oberoi Mena house, the pyramids are a stone's throw away),for a few days then take a relaxing cruise on the Nile on the best (and very luxurious) boat on the Nile, the Oberoi Zahra...the food, service, tours (valley of the Kings and Queens, Luxor, Temple of Hatsepshut etc etc etc are EXCEPTIONAL. I know, I was there last year...unforgettable.

    in short,
i'm from luxor and i'm working as an agent for thomas cook uk in luxor
so, it's advisable to book your trip to egypt by a travel agency bcz it's trasted
and my advice to you is to book a week to luxor with thomas cook including an overday to cairo
so you can enjoy the perfect weather in luxor also you can visit the pyramids and you can choose the nearest airport to start from (just three airports):
    1-gatwick
    2-manchester
    3-Birmingham
hope for you a lovely time

    Hello

I am working as Holiday Rep in Sharm El-Sheikh

Still sure you can do the one day visit for Sharm El-Sheik to Cairo to see the pyramids or also to Luxor to see the valley of the kinds and karnak temple

Either you can go to see the pyramids by Air pickup about 4:30 am and you will return around 8:30 Pm
You will have the chance to see the Pyramids + sphinx and the riches museum in the world the Egyptian museum where is Tutankhamen mask in the 2nd floor
Sure you will be accompanied by professional Egyptology

or you can go by bus which takes about 6 hours going and 6 hours coming back

For more detailed information please check the website in the source and you will find all the trip and even you can book it before leaving home

    Hi,

How nice of you to surprise your hubby. :-) I think it really depends on what your interests are besides the Pyramids. Are you beach people or do you think your hubby will be more inclined to experience the historical and cultural side of Egypt. That will help you make your decision.

Sharm and Luxor are about an hour's flight from Cairo so distance-wise, one isn't any better than the other.

Price wise, if your Sharm package is all inclusive and that works for you, then yes, you can stay there and do day trips or overnight trips to Cairo and Luxor. However if you like to check out the restaurant scene or aren't big on alcohol, then the all inclusive might not be worth it to you and you might be better off basing yourself somewhere else and seeing more of the sites. You know best what suits your travel style.

I would suggest trying to sneak some more info off your hubby :-). Everyone says they want to see the Pyramids but on further investigation you might get a better sense of how he would spend a week in Egypt. Feel free to send me a message with the dates you're thinking of and we'll see what we come up with.

    Good luck!
    KC

Hi, sunnyday. Have you thought about staying in Cairo? From there you will be able to quickly travel to Giza and see Pyramids built during the Third and Fourth Dynasties. You can also see the Great Pyramid, built for the Pharaoh Cheops, as well as the Pyramids of Khefren and Mycerinus. Then, not far from the Pyramids is the great Sphinx of Giza, the legendary chimeral statue that combines the head of King Khfren with a lion's body. It’s just a thought, but it might be a good place to stay. Enjoy your trip!
