Italy united with Rome? You mean Piedmont maybe that started the process of unification Rome was one of the last to join

The italian unification in the 1800s created on country where several had previously existed. This allowed the various mini countries (like Naples etc) to have the political and economic advantages of a larger country. Culturally though, the regions are still very devoted to their old kingdoms--- this usually shows itself during soccer matches! There are also lots of regional jokes about one area vs the other.
