I am thinking about getting a german shorthaired pointer. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of getting either a male dog or a female dog? Many thanks

Additional Details

Just adding now.

The pros and cons I have already thought of:

Male - if it's not done I could stand at stud, but then behaviour may be harder to control with testosterone!

Female - if its not done i could breed from it more easily.

Also, how often do dogs have seasons? Do they bleed?

Female dogs tend to be more 'protective' and easier to be around. They are more relaxed than male dogs and some say they are easier to train as they are able to concentrate better. If you have an unfixed female it can be a pain cleaning up and having males constantly around. Males are more hyper generally, much more willing to compete with you and any other animals in the household. They live their lives it seems on the threshold of something happening and if they are unfixed and there is a female in heat nearby you better make damn sure you have them secured! The whine a lot during this also...

Get a female and get it fixed. - Females are always better when they're fixed.

both are good but it matters if you can take care of puppies if the female has babies

My personal opinion is that, unless you are going to breed from the dog, they should be neutered be it male or female.
It costs a lot more to neuter a female than it does a male. However, if you don't get a female neutered, she will come into season regularly and you will have male dogs trying to mate with her.
Once they have been neutered, I don't think there will be so many pros or cons which sex to get.

Well There's No Pros Or cons Really Its How You Teach Him/ Her x
I Guess The only Con of getting a female is that if shes in season you have to cover your furniture x Also My aunt has a good trick she cut a hole in a pair of boxers for her dog to put her tail through and when shes on season she puts it on her ;) i saves her from having to cover furniture :D x

I would say that it depends. Some boys get very boisterous with other male dogs but girls aren't as much. I have a little boy dog and he is soo lovely and i wouldnt have chosen any other dog because he it so sweet and loving.
    Good luck with it.

    I've had both.

    Female-
    Pros
-They generally have better temperaments than male dogs.
-They are usually smaller and eat less.
-They are easier to train and more likely to form a solid attachment to you
-If they have puppies you can sell them. Or recreate '101 Dalmatians'. =P
    Cons
-They go on heat and you have to take measures to keep them away from male dogs. They try to escape and it's kinda annoying. If you neuter them, it adds more cost.
-^If you don't, you'll end up with a pile of unwanted puppies that will cost you money and increases the abandoned dog problem.
    -More demanding of attention, generally.

    Male-
    Pros
    -Their temperament is more consistent.
-Dogs are said to have more character, they're more independent.
    Cons
-They'll try and escape if any girl dogs in heat are around, which is dangerous and annoying.
-More dominant and more ready to challenge human authority.
    -More aggressive.
-Neutering may or may not be successful and can change their character and the texture of their fur.

I would probably get a female dog if I had a choice, but really if you're not intending to breed or anything and just want a family pet, pick the healthiest, most lovable dog from the litter. =P

It usually comes down to which you prefer. If you are going to have the animal neutered it won't matter that much. Males are usually larger than females.
If you are not going to neuter the animal you may have problems with both sexes. Male that are not mated can become aggressive, try to escape to breed with a local female and could develop certain cancers later in life. Females can also try to escape to find a male, you'll have to deal with the bleeding when she is in heat and they can develop cancers later on.
In any case ...make sure they get plenty of exercise. Proper amounts of exercise and discipline can prevent lots of behavior problems from occurring.

Well i have had both and i find:

Males: tend to be more needy and craving of your affection. They are loyal but can be a little one-track minded. They can be a little more mellow and also when they play a little more boisterous. They know when to play dumb when it suits them however they tend to want to please you more. Highly intelligent and will do anything for food. HOWEVER an unfixed male will ignore you for any female, they can smell a bitc* on heat from miles away and will do whatever they can to reach her - jump and chew through fences ect. Males are stronger than bitc*es, they also mark (pee on things and **** their legs) males both unfixed and fixed are known to to pee in others houses if they also have dogs to mark their scent, our old boy even cocked his leg on a human (he received a sharp tug on the lead, a stern no and put in the down position:))

Females: Dont thumb me down but i have to say can be smarter, more feisty, a little more protective and dominant, they can be a little more aloof and will often come and say hey and then go off again to their fave part in the house. Although they may need less attention they will show a fierce loyalty. They are soo intelligent and tend to give everything their best shot - not to please you mind .. just so they can show you they can do it:) Females have periods, also known as heat cycles every 6 months, its small amounts of blood for 1 month. You can and should spay at 2 years, so she has enough seasons to grow and mature. When she is on heat she will need to be leashed outside ALL the time, and she must never been unattended outside even in your yard, its a little extra effort.

This of course varies from breed to breed and dog to dog, no one can ever say for sure:D

    Good luck with your choice!!!

Hallo, With respect it is not the sex you want to consider first, its the dogs welfare that should be number one. Do you work, are you out of your home a lot of times, do you live in a flat. Do you mind going out when it is pelting down with rain. Have you got a large garden? is there a park close to you? can you afford to feed him, or her? Are you prepared or capable of makeing sure the dog does not go out until at least two weeks after its second jab? Vets rip you off will you get the dog insured, or have you the right to use the Blue Cross hospitals? Will you make sure he has a collar and lead? The dog must have plenty of room, do you have it? If you can honestly answer yes to most of these questions, then it may be time to choose your dog. What I do is go to the local library, get the book on your prefered breed, and look in the back for the Secretary of the breed in the UK.then ask her forthe details of a breeder she can reccomend. You will then be sure of not getting a "factory" dog. Then begins the HARD WORK of training. Do you still think you want to care for a dog? Best Wishes, and a Merry Xmas to you and your dog. Mordenmonk.

Think about it for while, and compare the male and female of any animal or even people. Now which do you get along with better male or female, mom or dad. Personally I get along with females, Dogs, cats, friends, or whatever. My female lab is my best friend and my female cat is cool too.

I can't compare the two, but i have a 5 month old male (born 6-19-09). He is already potty trained, sits, lays, and heals on command. I can walk him off the leash and he stays near me at all times and wont let me out of his site. In fact I ve tried hiding on him and he panics when he cant see me and comes and finds me by scent immediately. I also have a 4 year old daughter and he is pretty good around her and even listens to her commands! My daughter can get him pretty wound up, fairly easily! But he still is controllable with commands, and calms quickly! Only problem is he likes digging in the garbage can! Also I am not sure if any of this will change when he reaches maturity! I was told to wait to neuter until seven months or so, for proper muscle development, so he is not yet neutered!
