Show me another »

Thailand, need information please.?

Me and a group of friends (14 people in total) are planning to go to Thailand in april or july for a week but we have no idea where to look for travel information or any good sites where we can book our vacation. If anybody can give us info about what to see (not Pukhet though) in Thailand or where to book a trip to Thailand that would be great. We want to do this through internet and not a travelagent, don't ask why =P
(I live in Belgium so please just give me European sites in English)
Thanks!

    book flights on Kayak.com
why not spend a couple of days in Bangkok, and then take a train or ferry to an island and spend the rest of the time there.

Should be of some help. Also, have some Thai money to pay at the airport when you leave.
They charge you to leave the country.

I know you do not want to use a travel agent - you don't have to USE one but they are a good source of free information. They will tell you what airlines leave your part of the country. They will give you some hints on when is the best time to fly too! Get the information and buy your tickets elsewhere if you want. With so many people involved in this trip a travel agency may be able to pull some strings and get you some good prices. Up to you!

Once you know what airlines fly from your nearest international airport then you can access those airline websites. All you have to do then is check the prices for various dates around your preferred departure date and see what a flight costs. You can even call up the airline travel agents and book in person. Start your holiday in Bangkok and end it there so you will be closer to the airport when you fly home.

My advice is to get a hotel near the Skytrain so you can use that overhead rail service to get around the city. If you are all kids in school then perhaps get a hotel in the Khao San Road area where there are loads of other kids around. No Skytrain in the KSR area!

If you are all a bunch of guys then see if you can fit Pattaya into your schedule. Lots of nightlife in that city and the hotels are cheaper than Bangkok. From Bangkok the bus ride is around 2 hours and pretty cheap. If there are women in your party then try to fit Chiang Mai into your schedule. In Chiang Mai you can take in some trekking too!

For tours in Thailand check out a local travel agency - there are hundreds of them around. These Thai travel agencies will have a menu selection of tours that you can look over. Tour company will pick you up at your hotel and return you there at the end of the trip. With such a big group you can ask for discounts off the normal price. First find out what the normal price is then mention that you have a huge group.

Wait until you get to Thailand to change your money over to Thai baht. In Thailand you have to use their currency. There are lots of bank money changers all over the main cities and at the airport. If you plan on using a credit or debit card make sure you tell your bank first so there is no problem getting withdrawals. You do not pay a separate departure tax at the airport it is included in the price of your ticket for almost a couple years.

Below are some helpful travel forums you can look over. If you need hotel recommendations make sure you mention how much per night you want to spend - don't say "cheap" or "middle priced" use a baht figure. To go to Thailand for only a week is not getting your money's worth from the airplane ticket. Once in Thailand the price of hotels are pretty cheap so what's another week really going to cost in the end?

Read up on how to take taxi cabs from the airport and how to take taxi cabs in the city. If any of your party are dopers be warned that in Thailand you can be in severe trouble if you get caught with drugs. Often the doper puts his dope in his buddies luggage so they take the hit. Before you fly home thoroughly inspect your luggage and keep an eye on it! Read up on scams and other problems you might encounter in Thailand.

Before the internet became popular "in the old days" people used to actually read travel guides that they purchase or check out from a library! You can visit out a library and get some idea of what is available from the travel section.

Google up "what to see and do in Thailand" and you will get many hits too!

And have a nice time in Thailand!

If you go to Thailand on April I suggest to go to the beach in Thailand.
Try to visit The beaches and Islands at East Coast of Thailand like Koh Mak, Koh khang, Koh Kood/Kut.
    Ko Kood/Kut
This island is the farthest island from the coast of Trat. Its size ranks it as the fourth largest island in Thailand or the second largest island next to Ko Chang in Trat. The island, which is 25 kilometers long and 12 kilometers wide covers an area of approximately 105 square kilometers or 65,625 rai. Its natural features include mountains and plains where many streams originate and become waterfalls. One famous waterfall is Nam Tok Khlong Chao, which flows throughout the year and is an ideal place for swimming as it is comprised of 3 tiers; of which the upper two tiers are running streams and the lower one is a large pond. In 1911, King Rama VI paid a royal visit to this waterfall and named it 'Nam Tok Anam Kok' to commemorate Ong Chiang Su. In addition; there are beaches with crystal-clear seas which are popular among visitors such as Taphao Beach, Khlong Chao Beach, Khlong Hin Beach, Phrao Beach, etc. Accommodations with a private atmosphere is available for visitors at the inner sea of Ko Kut, and the other two islands, Ko Rat and Ko Mai Si, opposite to Ko Kut. The best time for a visit to Ko Kut is between beginning of November and the end of February.

Koh Mak is perfect for relaxing and soaking up the suns on one of the many beautiful, deserted, white sand beaches and swimming in the stunning clear blue water.
Because the island is small and flat its perfect for exploring and getting close to nature on one of the jungle walks or for the more adventurous there is a 3 hour cycle track through plantations, jungle tracks, villages and along the coastline.
Being on the edge of the Koh Rang natural park there are many beautiful places to snorkel and scuba dive. The best corals can be seen at Koh Kra and Koh Tong Lang. There are many deep sites at Koh Rang for scuba divers to explore, trips can be arranged at one of the islands dive shops.

Koh Chang isn’t a small island, so unless you are an unfeasibly healthy Scandinavian, or a stoned backpacker you won’t be wandering from beach to beach in the midday sun. Therefore, choosing where you stay is important. All the beaches have a different vibe and most people will have one they prefer to the others.

Read through my random thoughts and descriptions of the different areas and by the end of it all you will either be more confused than ever, as some of the info may not tally with the tour brochures and travel magazine’s ‘Undiscovered, Palm fringed, ‘Last Paradise on Earth’, Oriental Eden’ take on the island; or you will have a better idea of where to stay and what to really expect should you decide to visit.

But If you go to Thailand on July.

You should go to Ti Lor su and Ti Lor Lay Water Fall , Umphang, Tak Northwestern Thailand,
Thi Lor Su Waterfall the biggest famous waterfall of Thailand, also the stunning, largest falls of Southeast Asia and ranked sixth prettiest famous waterfall of the world.

you are going to see a lot more than simply Thailand's highest (and according to Thais the most beautiful) waterfall. From Umphang you can arrange to take a trip rafting and treking through the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary down the Mae Klong river to Tee Lor Su, passing through some wild and wonderful countryside and then ride an elephant to see Karen Village.
The best month to visit there is July - November

I'm not sure where you can get cheap flight rates from Belgium because i'm no where near there. But i know for internal flights in Thailand use http://www.bangkokair.com/ or http://www.airasia.com/

For accommodation i definitely recommend http://www.sawadee.com/hotels/ for the cheapest rates ranging from $10AUD - $3000AUD per room per night. If you book accommodation through an agent, you'll be spending $100 per person per night and on Sawadee.com you'll be paying half the price for the room not per person.

You didn't ask this but i thought it may be a useful information, make sure you have a minimum for $100AUD per day to spend in Thailand to really enjoy your time without regrets.

    Enjoy!

Travel agents suck balls so good on you.
I dont know who flys to Eurpoe Cheap however the flights from Airasia are some of the most competitive to other locations and you may save money on conecting to them at another location (in particular Kuala Lumpur.)
You have a lot of people so I would be inclined to hire a people mover mini bus. If you cant find one on the net please let me know and I can hook it up for you.
Transport around Thailand is very easy in country using teh public system and with 14 of you it should be a fun adventure.
What to see is such a broad heading.
I would be inclined to head out of Bangkok (after seeing the sites there.). Kanchanaburi tiger temple, Ayudhya, Lopburi, Koh Chang, koh mak, Chantaburi gem street.

The places that you don't miss to visit is Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha.

Every visitor to Bangkok should see the magnificent buildings within the Grand Palace compound to get a feeling of the grandeur architectural style.

A great place for a holiday, but you need longer than a week especially if you are flying from Belgium. You'll land in Bangkok and that's as good as place as any to start, but you'll need two/three days to acclimatise, see the city and get over jet-lag, that doesn't leave you that much time to see anything else.

From there you can go to Kanchanaburi in the west - that is River Kwai territory and while you can see the bridge, visit the war cemeteries and get back in a day, you'll miss seeing the rest of the area. I'd recommend booking a two/three day visit, staying on a floating hotel on the River Kwai itself and getting tours around the area - eg the monument/museum at Hellfire Pass (a giant slab of rock that Aussie POWs had to cut their way through pretty much by hand). This is part of the death railway and although it sounds morbid it is worth visiting. There are other sights to see, caves, waterfalls etc - if you go as part of a group on a tour you'll have a guide and van to ferry you around.

Alternatively you can go to Chiang Mai in the north east - a day's journey there and a day back by coach or train, although you can fly in a fraction of the time. Chiang Mai is very laid back, friendly, loads of hotels and cheap guest houses (that would cost a few Euros a night) - don't expect luxury! From there you can hang out in the city centre, visit dozens of Buddhist temples or if you prefer you can do adventure tours in the jungle - over-night treks, mountain biking, rafting, elephant riding, and visit the hill tribes.

There is Chiang Rai further to the north and Sukothai in the north centre - with fantastic ruins.

All in all you need a good two/three weeks to do Thailand properly and that's without going anywhere near Phuket etc.

Regarding travel agents...tourism is the biggest industry in Thailand and every hotel/guest house will be able to arrange tours etc for you or point you in the right direction. So it is best to work out what you want to do in advance and then action it when you get there - perhaps by looking and asking around to see what other holiday makers or ex-pats recommend. To book a flight, do a bit of googling - most of the big name airlines fly into Bangkok and from Amsterdam or Brussels you'll have quite a choice, it is a long flight though.
