Edmund Hilary,(as he was then),led the final assault which reached the summit of Mount Everest.
He was accompanied by a Sherpa porter,by the name of Tenzing, the news was released in the UK on the coronation day of QE2.This was the first time Mount Everest was successfully climbed.

Hillary and Sherpa Tensing successfully climbed Everest before the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the second, but the information was suppressed until the coronation, to boost the national pride. Thank God for the internet and it's reduction of the ability of governments to manipulate the truth.

The expedition was led by Col. Hunt and was a Commonwealth effort. Sir Edmund hilary as considered the fittest of the expedition and was with Tensing chosen to attempt the final assault.
I as an eleven year old at the time am grateful for any delay in announcing the news (if indeed there was one) because it di enhance the excitement of the day and I well remember the Queen of Tonga winning the hearts of the crowd by keeping her carriage open in the pouring rain. if i remember correctly she dwarfed the Grenadier Guards. It was a wonderful day vied on a black and white 12" television at my aunts house
