Need help for trip to london in Dec.?

I am planning to visit london in Dec 17th - 21st. So far I am completely lost as to where I am going to stay and how to travel about. Trains and the tubes are all new to me as we have none where I live lol. I want to find a cheap nice hotel in London with easy access to transport for the main shopping area, London Eye, London Dungeon, Natural History Museum and Science museum etc.
Can anyone suggest a hotel for those?
Also what do I do for travelling to these locations. I've been reading a bit on both Oyster Cards and TravelCards but I'm not sure which is best for what I need ???

This link might help.

The bus and tube system in London is excellent and gets you around very easily. Wherever you stay it will be only 20 minutes or less by tube to the next destination you need. From the suburbs on the outskirts of London to the centre is about 30 minutes by tube so you can stay almost anywhere and be in the centre quickly.

Have a look on londontown.com for good deals on hotels.

Or if you want something very cheap use www.easyhotel.com the rooms are horribly orange and white and very basic though they are clean. Iv used them a few times.

Id recommend getting a travel card as you can use them on tubes and trains.

Regarding hotels...I suggest you google "central London + hotels" and there'll be plenty of choice along with special deals.

Transport - look at http://www.tfl.gov.uk that will give you advice on what to do and where to go. The likelihood is that as you'll mostly be in central London that you buy a weekly (or a series of daily) travelcards for zone one and two. That gives you unlimited travel by bus, train and tube in that area.

it may be quite difficult to find a cheap hotel in the centre of london. the tubes are actually pretty simple to figure out and the maps are available at every station. you won't need an oyster card for the amount of time you're staying. if you get a hotel near any train station you'll be able to get to the places you mentioned.
if you have any problems all the transport information is also online
    hopefully that helps

for a good guide to the transport system and also travelcards and the oystercard take a look here

    http://www.milesfaster.co.uk/information…

Cheap is really relative. Cheap in the very central areas is around £100 for a double. Moving slightly out the rates will drop to nearer £60 but depends if you want certain facilities and meals. Take a look here:
    http://www.milesfaster.co.uk/cheap-londo…

Really your best best is a B&B hotel around Pimlico and an Oystercard for the transport system.

www.travelodge.co.uk is fairly cheap. I recently stayed at Marlybone, which is their cheapest hotel and is right next door to the Marlybone tube station.

An Oyster card will cost you £3 to purchase and then you can add credit to it. Probably best just get get an Oyster card and ask for enough credit to get you around say zone 1 for 5 days. If you plan to return at a later date, you can add credit to your Oyster card again. If you venture further afield and use more credit, you can just top it up when it's needed.

You will get the hang of riding the tube. And there's always a guy stood near the barriers who you can ask. Looking at an underground map you just need to be aware of where you are (i.e. which station) then figure out the best route to your destination. You may need to get one line for a few stops, change at a station that intersects another line so that you can go onto another line etc. until you get to your destination. Example - riding the Northern Line until Tottenham Court Road, then getting on a train on the Piccadilly line to Leicester Square.

Sometimes a line splits off in two directions, such as the Northern Line which can be Via Bank or Via Charring Cross. It may be that the station you want is on the Charring Cross branch. So you just wait for the right train.

    Hi,
Travelling around in London is really easy.... the tubes are a bit strange when they are new to someone but it's a simple system and it's easy to get around (if there are no delays :-)). Buses are good too.... check http://tfl.gov.uk, it's a great site for travelling around London.

For the hotels, I use http://www.hotelpond.com - they have a huge selection of hotels, the site is reliable and easy to navigate.... have emailed them too in the past and they had a special deal and were very helpful.... for what you want to do, I would recommend that you look somewhere in the west end, near southbank or around holborn/ chancery lane...

    hope this helps

Look for a hotel near Lancaster Gate tube, you can get the Heathrow Express in from the airport to Paddington (a few blocks away). Its easy to walk across the park to the Museums that you mention, and its easy to get the tube, or a bus into the West End from there. There are also a number of great local pubs and places to eat nearby.
