Second try at the question "The "must see's" in this part of germany?"?

Question

we are holidaying next summer in a village not far from Bernkastel-Kues in Germany. What would you recommend to do or see - besides the obvious boat trips, castles etc. We wont mind travelling an hour or so from where we are staying. Many thanks.

please,,no more Nazi jibes as in my last attempt at posting this question - one of the reasons I am going to Germany is to try to find out which concentration camp my Czech Grandfather died in - so some sensible answers please!

we are in our 40's travelling with an 80year old (but very fit) grandpa, and our 14 year old daughter and our 18year old son. so we are up for most things really - Thanks

I just came back from Germany, I spend a couple weeks there saw several places Bamberg, Nuremburg, Munich, Heidelberg, Augsburg and a few others one place that would really be a shame to miss is Rothenburg it is the most adorable town you can imagine look it up on ricks steves website he did a travel show there. If you have any plans of going to Augsburg, skip it not worth the time its dosnt have much character to is. If you want histor Munich is really the way to go. I sill with i spent more time there. Its where the nazi party was started you can also take a trip from there to Dakow to research ur grandfather there. If you go to Munich dont miss the Hofbrauhaus, and try the dark radler beer, increadible.

Koblenz isn't too far from where you'll be and is a beautiful town. After you've finished exploring there, follow the Rhein back towards Wiesbaden...it's a gorgeous drive with a castle every few minutes. Idar-Oberstein is also within about an hour from you and you can visit the Felsenkirche there...the "Church in the Rocks". Someone else also mentioned Trier and I think it's a great choice. There are some wonderful Roman ruins to see there.

If you're interested in seeing anything outside of Germany, Luxembourg City is also really close and is a beautiful place to visit.

For your travel reason i would suggest it would be best to visit the Jewish museum in Frankfurt. If you have questions about your grandfather. Maybee the frankfurt jewish Commune can help you. Adress: Bornheimer Landwehr 79B, 60385 Frankfurt am Main. Because of all the nazi postings you have to find the right phonenumber yourself. The right phrase to search is "Jüdische Gemeinde Frankfurt." If you want to visit something and you dont know where to search. The area you stay is called Rheinland pfalz. Not so far away is the area Rhein Main. So if you google Rheinland Pfalz or Rhein Main you can search for yourself. Frankfurt is also not that far away. Or Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt

I have only been Munich on a business trip, but one place to which I was taken by my hosts, was a German Beer garden - the atmosphere was lovely, the beer was great and so was the food (lots of breads and pickled herrings, etc.)
I had a lovely evening and would recommend that if there is one near your holiday centre.

Try to go bathing in one of the "Mare", which are small lakesthat have formed in teh craters of former vulcanosl There are a number of those close by, and they are free to swim in, and very beautiful.
Other than that: wine tastings, wine fests, castles... Trier, with it's Roman roots, Aachen...

your not to far from Trier. my wife and I spent a couple days their and it was really cool. There is the 'old town' with features from Constantine's rule of the Roman Empire. The Mosel River winds around the city and offers river cruises. The Nells Park hotel offers wonderful cuisine and has a remarkable rose garden. I sincerely hope you have a wonderful trip. This is a very nice area of the country.

the Mosel Valley itself is very intersting. Going to the Deusches Eck, where the Mosel meets the Rhein is famous.
The oldest Town of Gemany is Trier, (must be seen!)
Wine tasting at Rhein and Mosel ist also a german "must".
