The "must see's" in this part of germany?

Question

we are holidaying next summer in a village not far from Bernkastel-Kues in Germany. What would you recommend to do or see - besides the obvious boat trips, castles etc. We wont mind travelling an hour or so from where we are staying. Many thanks.

please,,no more Nazi jibes - one of the reasons I am going to Germany is to try to find out which concentration camp my Czech Grandfather died in - so some sensible answers please!

Well the must sees will largely depend on your personal interests since you do not name any I will give you a site as a starter

Two people called this woman a nazi simply because she is going to Germany on holidays. Lots of people go to Germany on holiday, it doesn't mean they are nazis, and look to the policies of your own country before you start giving out to people who are simply out to broaden their minds and increase their life experiences.

First of all, ignore the nazi jibes.
Bernkastel-Kues is a beautiful part of the mosel valley and you will find so much to do and see.

board.
Enjoy your visit. Don't worry about the language as almost all the people speak english and are happy to practise their skills.

Spend a day in Saarbrucken. rent a bike. You will fall in love.

I am sorry about your grandfather and hope you will find him and get closure.

You will be staying in one of the most beautiful areas in Germany. Wherever you go you will see castles, vineyards, rivers and tidy little cities.

You might want to go to Trier (spoken Treer) an visit the remains of Roman occupation, I think you might find locations pertaining to Charlemagne, the first Emperor of the Franks and the Roman Empire of German Nation.
Cologne - the Dome
Excursions into Belgium, France Luxembourg and the Netherlands are only a stone throw away. After you have eaten a Belgian waffle, you will never touch the stuff we eat in the US. In Holland try some fresh and smoked Gouda or Edam cheeses - to die for.
