Don't listen to people who bad mouth Athens -- for a first trip of one week, I would try to have at least four days in Athens, two of which I would spend going on organized coach trips - there is a really good day trip to Mycenae, Delphi and Epidauros and a very good half day trip to Cape Sounion - both well worth it. Then a couple of days to shop and visit the Acropolis and the New Acropolis museum, the Agora and the National Archaeological Museum. Maybe catch a concert at Herodion Atticus. Walk down Ermou Street for stores in all price ranges and end at the flea markets in Monastiraki. Then for your last couple of days take a boat or a plane to the Cyclades - Santorini, Mykonos or Naxos. Hotel will depend on your price range - high end you can't beat the Electra Palace - low end many have been mentioned here. We had a good experience this summer with the Art Gallery, but not everyone on Trip advisor likes it. If you do spend some time on Naxos, the Grotta Hotel is almost perfect and we paid 75 Euro a night, including breakfast, in high season. What I have described here is a fairly standard "first trip" experience - but that doesn't make it less worth doing. Can't help you with tobacco prices (I don't smoke) or allowances (as I don't know where you're coming from).

Lots of great places to stay in Greece, too many to mention, perhaps you should do some research with the trip advisor which is very good, your looking for busy place obviously, Ive been to Kefalos is Kos many times and love it, not busy though, also Crete, depends what you want from a holiday. Good luck.

Well it all really depends what you want; example do you want a quiet vacation, not too crowded with tourists or maybe you want a "party" vacation or maybe you want to go somewhere with lots of things to see, etc. I think we need more info ;)

Most of the established islands such as Crete, Corfu, Zante, Rhodes Kos, offer all that you are wanting. I would perhaps do some more research and prioritise what you are looking for. What shops are you looking for? The exchange rate within the Euro Zone is not that strong at the mo, though this could change next year..... so what you are looking to buy may not be the best prices generally in Greece.

Consider things such as transfer times to the islands, flight times from the UK, and days of the flights, as this may provide you with some natural conclusions.

Have visited many of the greek islands, so feel free to contact me for further info...........

Sure not the Athens city center where the nazis of "Hrisi Avgi" do their patrols to attack foreigners.

Stay in the islands. Very cosmopolitan.

my first thought is that a week is not long enough, no matter where you go in Greece, try to get two weeks in order to experience the great food, the wonderful people and the excellent beaches.
In answer to your question all the greek islands have something to offer, for great shopping, beaches and the chance to visit Turkey (20min away) i would try Kos Town. The price of tobacco may change by next year but now it is between 26 - 35euro per 200, i brought back 3,000. Do not buy cheaper in Turkey as you are only allowed to bring back 2 cartons- 40 cigs a waste of time.
