Travelling to New York... What is in each district?

I have been looking at a map of Manhattan as i want to book a hotel before i go and i was wondering what all the different areas are... E.G. 'Midtowns East & West', 'The Garment District', 'Greenwich village' 'Soho (TriBeCa)' etc... What are the cool places to stay? Which areas should i avoid? Also are there any links to websites that may explain what each area is like?

Well, the link below is to a very good webpage from New York Magazine all about Greenwich Village.

Just scroll down the page for dining, shopping and nightlife recommendations, and the links on the left side of the page will take you to similar pages about all of New York City's other neighborhoods, too...
