Immigrating to the usa?

Question

Im British Citizen and i've always wanted to work for the New York Police Department, either as a forensic scientist or General police officer.
Im planning on going to university to study Forensic science or Law.
If i got a degree then worked for the british police force for a year or two would it be easier to gain us citizenship. I've really always wanted to live in America, particularly New York.

David has the answer completely correct.The NYPD cannot sponsor any foreign national to work in its security services.The main requirement to work in most if not all security fields in the US is to have US citizenship.It is strictly enforced so coming in as a student & acquiring US citizenship before 35 eventually should be the main goal if you want your dream to come true.


"Requirements to Be Hired:

* Candidates must be at least 21 years of age on or before the day of hire.
* Candidates must be a United States citizen on or before the day of hire.
* On or before the day of hire, candidates must have successfully completed either:
1. Sixty (60) college credits with a 2.0 G.P.A. from an accredited college or university, or
2. Two (2) years of full-time, active military service in the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge and have a high school's diploma or its equivalent.
* Candidates must reside either within one of the five boroughs of New York City or one of the surrounding counties of New York City; Suffolk, Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Nassau or Putnam Counties on the day of hire.
* Candidates must possess a valid, unrestricted New York State Drivers License on the day of hire.

I think it would be easier to gain citizenship with your plan. Any country is more open to educated and experienced immigrants.

Having a technical skill would certainly help but it is not a guarantee. You would have to apply at the US embassy in your country of citizenship. Good luck.

i am from holland and what i know is that you need to contact them and try to ask if they can sponsor you you with a h1b visa. If you are good they do and you can climb up

I doubt it.
I am an American, married a Japanese, and she still had/has trouble getting into America.
You also shouldn't give up your British Citizenship because you might want to go back someday, and giving up your citizenship to your home country might make it difficult.
I think if you really want US citizenship, you should come to America on a student visa and try getting into the right classes and start training for police work in America, then, when the gov sees how serious you are about becoming a police officer in America, that might actually make getting your citizenship a little easier.

You need to be a cirizen to be a cop ...no visas available for that work ...





Pick a visa


There are basically NINE ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US:

(1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen.

(2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience. (H visas)

(3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you - but even the employer has to make a good case for you - so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.(L visas)

(4) You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland, are not generally eligible unless you, your spouse or parents were born abroad or held a different citizenship.

(5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. no green card)You must be a national of a qualifying Treaty countries. The business must have a minimum value of around $150k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $350k would be a nearer minimum (E-2 visas)

(6)You are an "investor" i.e. you have at least US $1m in assets to bring with you. half of that in a few areas. And your background will be investigated to the hilt. (EB-5 visas)

(7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years?

(8.The R1 visa is available to foreign members of religious denominations, having bona fide non-profit religious organizations in the U.S., for entering the U.S. to carry on the activities of a minister or religious worker as a profession, occupation or vocation

(9)THE UNUSUAL You are in a position to claim refugee status/political asylum. or You get a member of Congress to sponsor a private bill with legislation that applies just to you.
The S visa issued to persons who assist US law enforcement to investigate and prosecute crimes and terrorist activities such as money laundering and organized crime


Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. Writing for jobs is really a waste of time; likewise US employers have no idea what foreign qualification are or mean (except Degrees) it may pay you to get your qualification translated into a US equivalent, there are Companies that do this (www.wes.org) ..
But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $5k. So you can see you have to be offering something really special to get considered They may also have to prove to the Dept of labor that there is no American who can do the job if the position is to be permanent ©

If you really want to come to America on the basis of your skills, you need to study something technical or scientific with commercial application,, preferably to the doctorate level. Your current plan doesn't really cut it. Forensic scientists are usually employed by public bodies who (with the exception of academic jobs in universities) do not have the will or the money to sponsor foreigners. Police jobs are, to the most part, reserved for US citizens, and the path to citizenship is long.

I think you can only work for the American Police if you are an American citizen. Which would rule you out. Also jobs like this probably have a lot of applications and Im sure they would pick an American over a British Applicant.
