I really need some advice about my surprise trip away for my girlfriend...?

Ok well i'm in a bit of a dilemma...

You see, i want to take my girlfriend away to New York from 28th December - 5th Jan.

She has never been and i have told her we are going to Scotland. My plan is, to take her to the airport and then tell her... ( we live in London)

I have booked the hotel ( not paid for yet) and that was just over £500.

I figure we need about £500 spending money and i have come today to book my flights.

The thing is, unless you want to go via Canada for 5 hours, the flights are coming up at almost £ 600 pounds each.

So looking at it realistically, the week long trip is going to cost about £2,000.

Wowza...i mean i'm paying for this out of a ( very long anticipated) bonus at work, but i'm just thinking...that's loads of money just for a city break away.

I am not a cheapskate, but i'm just wondering, for that money - I'm sure you could get a 2 week holiday somewhere pretty nice and warm etc...would that be more worthwhile?

rather than just 6 days away?

I'm really stuck on what to do....guys / girls, what's your opinion?

thanks so much.

I don't know how adventurous you both are but we had the most amazing 5 day break to Ghana. We stayed at Big Milly's Back Yard http://www.bigmilly.com/ and spent about half the amount you are going to spend on NY.
It was amazing. Lovely individual bungalows, a cab picking us up and taking us back to the airport and wonderful winter sun. Highly recommended. The flight is only about 3 hours, no jet lag becuase you're on the same time and Big Milly's have the best food, great music and a fantastic bar! Women set up stalls to sell their goods to the tourists and it's a wonderful alternative to the big city breaks...
Good luck!

You're flying close to New Years Eve and NY City is a mecca for New Years revellers, everything will be more expensive. I'm sure you could get something very nice, in a warmer climate, don't forget it's cold in NY at New Years.

I think your g/f will be pleased either way. Its a very thoughtful idea and your using your own initiative (What a woman could only dream of!)
It does seem like quite an expensive break- you could go to NY another time in the year possibly, when it would be much more cheaper.
How about a warm break somewhere? I've just come back from Dubai- Paid £320 for my flights. It was amazing, and im saving to go back again very, very soon!
Just search around, ask friends and family for their advice- they're the people that know you best.
    Good luck :)
