Probably close between Manchester Birmingham, Hull and Glasgow, if you look at specific areas, crime stats and unemployment.

Additionally it has been conclusively proved (several times actually) in the states there is direct correlation between unemployment / low qualifications and rising crime rates.

Re - Nice Guy, how does unemployment stats have anything to do with the city being tough or not?!? Unemployment is based on the state of the economic climate and how many jobs there are available in a particular city to those living there. Unemployment does not equal crime, that's just a pathetic way of looking at things, shame on you.

In answer to your question, if you go from gun crime then London, Birmingham and Nottingham are the toughest cities, closely followed by Manchester and Glasgow.

Glasgow has to be the worst. It has about one fifth of the population of Scotland and over 70% of the violent crime..

Taggart is fiction but only in respect of his clear up rate.

As to sectarian trouble. This is summed up by a quotation. "Strathclyde Police have warned that they will not tolerate "sectarian behaviour" at the annual Orange Order parade in Glasgow this weekend".

If an Orange march is not "sectarian behaviour", what is? I despair.

My vote goes to Glasgow - a really hard tough city, with a long history of relgious warfare on the streets and at the football etc.

We are constantly being told that something is being done about violence in Glasgow. I do not believe a word of it. Result, Glasgow gets far fewer visitors than it deserves. The folk of Glasgow need to learn a trick - Tourism is worth Billion - get rid of the street gangs and you'll start making money big time.

The Met Police here in London got rid of most of the pickpockets from London's Oxford Street in a single year - result - trade up by over 25%.

There is no such thing as "toughest". Each city has its own good areas and bad areas.

You can go to a usually quiet seaside resort and get your head caved in on a Friday night.
